Child Safe Standard 6: suitable people are working with children and young people

Child Safe Standard 6 requires schools to ensure people working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.

For a school to be compliant with Child Safe Standard 6 they must meet these minimum requirements:

  • recruitment, including advertising, referee checks and staff pre-employment screening emphasise child safety and wellbeing.

  • Relevant staff and volunteers have current working with children checks or equivalent background checks.

  • All staff receive an appropriate induction and are aware of their responsibilities to children and young people, including record keeping, information sharing and reporting obligations.

  • Ongoing supervision and people management is focused on child safety and wellbeing.

The College has strict recruitment processes in place to ensure all staff at the College are suitably trained and are capable of working in a school environment. Before a person commences at the College thorough background checks are completed which include multiple reference checks and a National Police Check being conducted. If any concerns are identified during this process the person will not be granted employment at the College. Upon successful checks the person is provided with a letter of offer which outlines their responsibilities whilst working in a child safe school. New employees are also provided with a copy of the Child Safe Code of Conduct and the Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy.

Upon commencement of employment at the College all staff members partake in mandatory induction training which educate them on the Colleges guidelines and expectations relating to child safety. Staff members regularly participate in Professional Learning opportunities to aid them in staying up to date with the best teaching practices and ways of supporting students in different situations.
