Construction Curiosities in Preschool Blue

Our Preschool Blue children have been investigating cylindrical objects as they build and create games with loose parts. To extend their construction curiosities, we read the book 'Iggy Peck Architect', inspiring them to think taller and bigger with their constructions and to consider drawing their designs too. We introduced a step ladder to explore perspective, enhancing their coordination and balance, and supporting them to create without limits. Children have been learning about scale and height, and the attributes of 2D and 3D shapes.  They have noticed how things change when you look up, down and into them. The children have also been learning about respect as they navigate spatial awareness, sharing the ladder and resources with each other. Children presented photos of their constructions on the big screen and drew their designs for others to use to recreate their constructions. 

James: “I made a big volcano. I used a big stick and another small cylinder. There were rectangles. I even draw the ladder.”

We also ventured out on walks to identify circles and cylinders in our Loreto College environment, even visiting our ELC to Year 11 Art Show, where children noticed 3D printed sculptures. This has inspired the introduction of 3D pens in our space, for children to bring their designs to life in new ways.
