Celebrating Science Week

Science Week brought plenty of curiosity and hands-on discovery to classrooms across Loreto, with students from Reception to Year 12 exploring scientific ideas through experiments, investigations and practical activities.

In the Senior School, students had the opportunity to experience science in action across a range of disciplines. Year 12 Chemistry students completed a summative practical involving the titration of colourful solutions, including iodine and capsicum extract, while Year 10 Biology students took part in ‘Murder a Meal’, using forensic analysis to investigate a mystery. Other activities included slime-making, investigations of hominid skulls and exploring the relationship between force and acceleration.

Learning Chinese Through Food

Over the course of the year, our Chinese students have been exploring one of the most important aspects of Chinese culture: food. Through a range of hands-on experiences, students have had opportunities to taste authentic Chinese dishes while deepening their understanding of the language and culture.

Our Year 10 students enjoyed an excursion to Burnside Village, where they sampled authentic Northern Chinese cuisine at a hidden gem tucked away near Coles. The experience gave students a genuine taste of regional Chinese food and culture.

Year 9 students were especially enthusiastic about their pork dumplings. In fact, they enjoyed them so much that they have kept asking Ms Li to reward them with another dumpling lunch. Having now enjoyed pork dumplings twice, we can only assume they have been working exceptionally hard in Chinese class!

Meanwhile, our Year 8 students were rewarded for their excellent effort and engagement with a spontaneous healthy pancake-making session. Ms Li even revealed her secret pancake recipe. Shh... don’t tell anyone! The activity was a fun way to celebrate their learning while bringing language, culture and food together.

These experiences have helped make learning Chinese memorable, engaging and delicious, while giving students a deeper appreciation of the rich cultural traditions behind the language.
