High Expectations with the Right Support

At St Joseph’s Mernda, we believe every child is capable of learning, growing and achieving success. High expectations mean believing in each student’s potential while providing the support they need to take their next steps.

High expectations do not mean expecting every student to learn in the same way or at the same pace. Teachers set clear and appropriately challenging goals, then provide guidance and adjustments to help each child work towards them.

Students are more engaged when they know their teachers believe in them. By encouraging children to attempt challenging tasks, learn from mistakes and keep trying, we help them develop confidence, independence and resilience.

The right support may look different for each student. It could include clear instructions, worked examples, visual prompts, extra practice, targeted feedback, more time or support from a teacher or classmate. As students develop confidence, this support is gradually adjusted to build greater independence.

We also aim to create classrooms where mistakes are viewed as a valuable part of learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, try different strategies and understand that finding something difficult does not mean they cannot succeed.

Families can reinforce this at home by recognising effort and progress and encouraging children to persist through challenges. Helpful questions might include, “What could you try next?”, “What support would help you?” or “What did you learn from that mistake?”

High expectations and the right support must work together. By providing both, home and school can help every child feel capable, take on new challenges and achieve their best.
