Performing Arts - Refining Our Musical Skills
Year 3 students have been revisiting and refining the musical skills they have developed throughout the term through a range of engaging, hands-on activities.
In honour of Book Week - A Symphony of Stories, students developed their active listening skills through a musical story, Allegro!
Students rotated through a variety of musical experiences, including body percussion, dance, bucket drumming, digital composition and xylophone playing. They followed simple notation to perform a body percussion piece, rehearsed and performed a short dance sequence, explored rhythmic patterns through bucket drumming and created their own compositions using Chrome Music Lab. Students also developed their pitch and melody skills by learning to play Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on the xylophone.
These activities provided opportunities for students to listen, perform, compose and respond to music while building confidence, coordination, rhythm, pitch and teamwork skills.
Performing Arts - Music - Exploring Digital Composition
Year 6 students have been immersed in exploring music composition through Chrome Music Lab, a digital resource that allows them to create, experiment and discover how music can be made in different ways. Students experimented with rhythm, pitch, tempo, sound and expression using interactive musical tools.
Using Song Maker, students created rhythmic and melodic patterns and discovered how changing the tempo, instruments and arrangement can transform a composition. They also explored how shapes and patterns can be used to create music, composing musical pieces inspired by squares, hearts, diamonds, smiley faces and their own creative designs.
Students then explored Kandinsky, where drawing shapes, lines and patterns generates different sounds. Through this playful combination of art and music, students investigated how location can influence pitch and how different shapes and colours can affect the sound or tone.
Students are continuing to develop their confidence as young composers by experimenting with musical ideas, making creative choices, sharing their compositions and reflecting on what they discovered about the relationship between art, technology and music.
Italian - 4, 5, 6
Our Year 4, 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to enjoy an authentic Italian language and cultural experience—making their own pizzas! Students watched a video explaining how to prepare l’impasto (pizza dough), which had been made in advance for the activity. They loved choosing their own condimenti (toppings) and, of course, eating their delicious creations.

Visual Art - Art Show Preparation! 🎨
In Visual Arts lessons, students have been buzzing with creativity as across the school they prepare for our “La Dolce Vita” Art Show & Bake Sale next week.
Students have been busy creating some amazing artworks, exploring different techniques and celebrating Italian culture through art. The Studio has been full of colour, creativity and excitement as students put the finishing touches on their pieces.
Next Wednesday the 16th of September: 3.30pm - 6pm in the Nazareth Centre. We can’t wait to showcase their amazing work and celebrate “La Dolce Vita” – the sweet life – with our school community!🎨
Sport
Over the past few weeks, students have been developing their skills and teamwork through our Volleyball unit, learning the fundamentals of serving, passing, setting and working together during gameplay.
We have also had a number of students proudly represent St Joseph’s at the District Athletics Carnival. Our selected athletes were fantastic throughout the day, showing great determination, sportsmanship and school spirit.
We are incredibly proud of the way they competed, supported one another and gave their best effort in every event.
Our Year 5/6 students have also been getting involved in Hooptime Basketball, taking to the court with plenty of enthusiasm and team spirit. It was fantastic to see students working together, putting their basketball skills into practice and showing such positive sportsmanship throughout the day.
A huge congratulations to all of our students who have represented St Joseph’s in sport — you have done an amazing job!
