The Importance of Fluency in Reading and Mathematics

 

Why is fluency important?

At St Joseph’s Primary School, building fluency is an important focus of our Learning and Teaching practice. Fluency is the ability to do something accurately, confidently and smoothly. When students become fluent in important skills, these skills become more automatic, allowing students to use their thinking to focus on more complex learning. Developing fluency helps students build strong foundations, increase their confidence and apply their knowledge in new and challenging situations.

 

Fluency in Reading

Reading fluency means being able to read words accurately, smoothly and with expression. When students develop reading fluency, they no longer need to use all of their energy to sound out each individual word. This allows them to focus on understanding what they are reading, making connections, building vocabulary and thinking more deeply about the text.

 

At St Joseph’s, students develop reading fluency through regular opportunities to practise reading familiar texts, reread passages and develop their accuracy, pace and expression. Families can support reading fluency at home by encouraging children to read every day, listening to them read aloud and encouraging them to reread favourite books and texts. Reading the same text more than once is valuable because each reread helps students become more confident and automatic readers.

 

Fluency in Mathematics

Mathematical fluency means being able to recall and use important mathematical facts and skills accurately, efficiently and confidently. For example, knowing number facts (automatic recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts) helps students spend less time working out basic calculations and more time focusing on solving problems, explaining their thinking and applying mathematics in new situations.

 

At St. Joseph’s, students regularly practise mathematical facts and skills through daily review, purposeful practice and opportunities to apply their learning. Families can support mathematical fluency by incorporating mathematics into everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, playing games, telling the time and discussing numbers. Short, regular practice can make a big difference in helping students develop confidence and automaticity with mathematics.

Whether students are reading a book or solving a mathematical problem, regular practice helps build accuracy, confidence and independence. At St. Joseph’s, we are continuing to place a strong focus on developing fluency so that our students have the skills and confidence they need to become successful, independent learners.
