German Immersion Program

Dr Inga Mertens-Walker

The Year 8 German Immersion class at recently stepped back in time — all the way to Medieval Europe!

As part of their Humanities unit on the Die Pest (the Black Death), students took part in a fun and interactive role-play lesson. Dressed in costumes representing the different layers of medieval society — clergy, nobility and peasants — students explored what life was like during this period in history.

To make the experience even more authentic, students performed mini role-plays in German, bringing history and language learning together in a memorable way. The activity helped students build confidence, deepen their historical understanding and fully immerse themselves in the German immersion experience — proving that learning can be both meaningful and fun!
