Chess Tournament

In the final week of Term 2, Mr Broadby and the Chess Club hosted the 2025 Thornbury High School Chess Tournament. The competition spanned four days, with students competing in an elimination format that kept students thinking several moves ahead.
Twenty students participated, representing Years 7 to 12. The matches were played in great spirits, with many coming right down to the wire.
On the final day, the Semi-Finals saw Otis Handsaker (Year 11) checkmate the impressive Maci Dustow (Year 7) to secure his place in the Grand Final. The other Semi-Final featured two Year 12 students, with Daniel Baillie outmanoeuvring his close friend Xenon Brownsea.
In the Grand Final, Otis proved too strong for Daniel, crowning himself the 2025 Thornbury High School Chess Champion. Both finalists received prizes for their outstanding efforts.
A huge thank you to all participants for playing their pieces in making the event such a success, and to Mr Broadby for organising the event and supplying the prizes for the winners. We look forward to the 2026 tournament, which promises to be even bigger and better.
