Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families, 

As the weather has started to cool down, we encourage all students to come to school dressed warmly.

This week's learning included problem solving using the distributive property for multiplication, writing the first body paragraph of an information report, continuing our novel study of Storm Boy, exploring the Acts of the Apostles to learn how the Church is a family that cares for one another, reviewing Auslan signs, and developing social and emotional learning skills.

Learning for Year 4 in Term 3:

Religious Education:

Next week in Religious Education, students will learn about the life of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and explore how she responded to the needs of others with faith and compassion. They will record key facts about her life and reflect on how they can "see a need and do something about it" in their own lives.

English:

Next week in English, students will continue reading Storm Boy while developing their information report writing skills. They will review the purpose, structure and features of an information report before writing the first body paragraph about the Coorong using their research and teacher modelling.

Mathematics:

Next week, students will learn to use the distributive property of multiplication and the area model to solve multiplication problems more efficiently. 

Integrated Curriculum:

Students will use thought tracking in drama to explore different perspectives within the same situation. They will stay in role, communicate their character's thoughts and feelings, and explain how different characters can view the same event in different ways. 

Auslan:

Next week in Auslan, Year 4 students will take part in a Mid-Cycle Progress Check, giving them the opportunity to reflect on the learning they have completed so far this semester and celebrate the progress they have made. Students will demonstrate their understanding of everyday communicative signs, use familiar signs, mime and gestures to express imaginative ideas and actions, and translate common words and phrases between Auslan and English. These lessons will encourage students to recognise their growth as Auslan learners and build confidence in using their developing signing skills.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week in Social and Emotional Learning, students will continue developing skills to recognise and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and use respectful strategies to solve problems and make safe, responsible choices.

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Tuesday 4th August - Funky Sock and Shoe Day

You may have noticed the beautiful new garden bed beside the Bethlehem Building.

A semicircle of murnong, also known as yam daisies, is beginning to grow. Murnong is an Indigenous plant that is native to our local area on Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country. The FIRE Carrier Team will continue adding seeds and caring for the garden. As a school community, we will be able to watch these important plants grow and develop over time. Planting species that belong naturally in our local environment is one way we can care for and help heal Country. The plants we are beginning with grew across this area for thousands of years before European settlement.
