Visual Arts Foundation - Grade 4

Foundation

Foundation students have completed their plasticine self-portrait magnets, sealed them with Mod Podge, and taken them home. We hope they have found a special place on your fridge or another magnetic surface and that your family is proudly displaying this wonderful first art project from their Foundation year. Students have been developing their scissor safety skills while learning to cut lines and simple shapes with control. They have carefully glued their artwork to our collaborative God's Creation collage mural, exploring the elements of land, water and sky. Our mural is looking fantastic so far, and students are excited to see it continue to grow each lesson.

What you can do at home 

Supervise your child using child-safe scissors to practise cutting lines and simple shapes. Encourage them to talk about their artwork by asking:

• Can you tell me about your artwork?
• How did you make that?
• What part are you most proud of?

Grades One and Two

Grade 1 and 2 students have now completed their pinch pot bowls, carefully selecting a Matte, Gloss or Glitter Mod Podge finish to seal and protect their artwork before taking it home. We hope their finished bowl has found a special place on display in your home.

Students have also begun exploring different lettering styles for their art folders, including bubble, block, interest and graffiti fonts. They are learning how to use lines and shapes to create bold, eye catching lettering before outlining with black marker and adding colour using paint sticks.

What you can do at home 

Encourage your child to notice different lettering styles on signs, books and packaging. Ask them:

• What type of lettering do you like?
• Can you try out that style?
• What lines and shapes can you see in the letters? (e.g. curved, wavy, round, pointy, zig-zag or straight)
• Why do you think the designer chose that style?

Grades Three and Four

Grade 3 and 4 students have continued creating personalised interest and graffiti style lettering for their art folders. They have practised developing their own unique font, sought and applied teacher feedback, and carefully transferred their designs onto their folders using grey lead and Sharpie. Students have now begun bringing their designs to life by layering Posca paint markers, acrylic paint and Sharpies, learning how different materials can work together to create bold, vibrant artworks while continuing to build their painting and time management skills.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to notice different lettering styles on signs, books, logos and advertisements. Ask them:

• What type of lettering stands out to you? Why?
• What lines and shapes can you see? (e.g. curved, straight, wavy, zig-zag or pointy)
• How do the colours make the lettering stand out?
• If you designed your own name, what style would you choose?

What's Ahead for Visual Arts

This semester, a key focus across all year levels will be helping students confidently talk about and describe artworks and visual design. Students will learn to explain their ideas, reflect on their creative choices, use appropriate visual arts vocabulary and provide feedback about their own and others' artwork.

Students will also participate in three exciting whole school art units throughout the semester:

• Science Week
• Book Week
• The annual DOSCEL Christmas Card Competition

We look forward to sharing these creative learning experiences and celebrating our students' artistic growth throughout the semester.
