Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families, 

It was another busy and rewarding week of learning in Year 6, with students embracing every opportunity to challenge themselves, think deeply and grow as learners. Across the curriculum, they demonstrated curiosity, resilience and collaboration as they explored inspiring stories, strengthened their literacy and numeracy skills, and expressed their ideas through creative and meaningful learning experiences. It has been wonderful to see students continuing to build confidence while supporting one another in their learning.

Throughout the week, students reflected on how their choices shape the story they leave behind as they explored the lives of the saints, while continuing their engaging novel study of Once by Morris Gleitzman. They further developed their understanding of fractions, brought history to life through drama inspired by the Old Melbourne Gaol, expanded their Auslan communication skills, and explored the importance of human dignity, equality and fairness through Social & Emotional Learning. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, effort and positive attitudes our Year 6 students displayed throughout the week.

Learning For Week 4:

Religious Education: In Religious Education, students continued exploring our inquiry, “How do our choices shape the story we leave behind?” by unpacking the Gospel that will be shared at our Week 5 Year 6 Mass. Through thoughtful discussion and reflection, students explored Jesus’ message and considered the faithful choices we are called to make in our own lives, recognising how our actions can positively impact others and shape the story we leave behind.

English: Students are exploring the purpose and key features of information reports, with a focus on identifying main ideas and supporting details. Using the country of Poland as their topic, students will research and organise factual information, making connections to the setting and historical context of the novel Once. This learning will strengthen their ability to write clear, well-structured information reports using accurate facts and appropriate text features.

Mathematics:  In Mathematics, students continue developing their understanding of fractions by learning how to add mixed numerals with different denominators. They apply strategies such as finding common denominators and regrouping when needed to accurately solve fraction problems, while building confidence in explaining their mathematical thinking and reasoning.

Performing Arts: In Performing Arts, students explore how movement can be used to communicate values, ideas and perspectives. Through creative movement activities, students develop their ability to represent concepts through performance, demonstrate control and expression, and explain the meaning behind the choices they made in their movements. 

Auslan: In Auslan, students reflect on their learning journey by identifying their progress, celebrating their achievements and setting goals for future improvement. Through self-reflection, students consider what they have learned, what they are proud of, and the next steps they can take to continue developing their Auslan communication skills.

Social & Emotional Learning: In Social & Emotional Learning, students participated in their Elephant Ed session, where they explored age-appropriate topics that supported their social, emotional and personal development. Through engaging discussions and activities, students built their understanding of respectful relationships, wellbeing and making positive, informed choice

What you can do to help your child at home

• Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes each day and discuss the characters, events and themes in their book.
• Practise maths skills through everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, measuring and working with fractions.

Important Reminders

• Fidget Toys: We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

You may have noticed the beautiful new garden bed beside the Bethlehem Building.

A semicircle of murnong, also known as yam daisies, is beginning to grow. Murnong is an Indigenous plant that is native to our local area on Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country. The FIRE Carrier Team will continue adding seeds and caring for the garden. As a school community, we will be able to watch these important plants grow and develop over time.Planting species that belong naturally in our local environment is one way we can care for and help heal Country. The plants we are beginning with grew across this area for thousands of years before European settlement.
