Spotlight on Learning

Dear Grade 3 Families,

Thank you to the parents who responded promptly to the Dietary Requirement Form regarding our 'Camp Rumbug' Day Camp which was sent out via PAM. If you haven't yet responded please do so ASAP.  Students must bring fruit snack and morning tea for the camp. 

• Friday 14th August - Camp Rumbug long day camp. Leaving school at 7:15am SHARP and returning 5:30pm. More details coming soon!

In Week 3, Grade 3 students continued building their knowledge and skills across all learning areas.

In Religious Education, students explored the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians, learning how the Holy Spirit guided and helped people to live like Jesus by making loving, kind, and faithful choices.

In English, students continued developing their spelling, handwriting, typing, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. They explored the suffixes -ful and -less, practised creating compound sentences, improved their reading fluency while responding to The Iron Man, and developed their understanding of information reports by planning and writing a body paragraph.

In Mathematics, students continued exploring division through equal group problems, using bar models to represent their thinking and solve problems involving sharing and grouping.

In Integrated Studies, students explored the narrative structure of shadow puppet performances, considering how characters, settings, and events worked together to create an engaging story as they began planning their own performances.

In Auslan, students compared the structures of English and Auslan, exploring how Auslan represented time differently and identifying key differences between the two languages.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students continued developing their understanding that everyone has unique interests, preferences, and strengths while practising respect, inclusion, and using kind language when interacting with others.

Grade 3 students participated in the Kids Roar child safety and empowerment program. Through age-appropriate lessons and discussions, students explored their rights, personal boundaries, respectful relationships, emotions, and body safety. They developed their confidence and understanding of how to recognise safe and unsafe situations, use their voice, and seek help when needed. The program supported students to feel valued, respected, and empowered to make safe choices while caring for themselves and others.

Learning for Term 3, Week 4

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students will learn about the Holy Spirit and how He helps Christians live like Jesus. They will develop their understanding by retelling who the Holy Spirit is and what He does, and by giving examples of how the Holy Spirit guides, strengthens, and helps Christians in their daily lives. 

English:

In English this week, students will improve their typing accuracy and speed on Thursday and Friday. They will learn to punctuate direct speech correctly when the speaker tag comes after the speech. Students will read and respond to questions about our class novel, The Iron Man, while developing their reading fluency by reading accurately, smoothly, and with appropriate expression. They will also build their vocabulary by using and understanding words from the novel, expand their sentences, write a summary sentence that identifies the main idea of a text, and complete sentences using the conjunctions because, but, and so. In writing, students will recall the purpose, structure, and features of an information report before planning and writing a body paragraph.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will solve a variety of equal groups word problems. They will learn to represent equal groups using bar models to help them visualise the problem, identify the known and unknown quantities, and develop effective strategies for finding solutions.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students will continue exploring shadow puppetry by learning the basics of puppet design and construction. They will create the essential elements of a shadow puppet and design a character for use in a shadow puppet show, developing their creativity and understanding of this storytelling art form. 

Auslan:

In Auslan, students will review the signs from Unit 5 and apply their learning through a range of activities. They will draw their favourite character from a signed story, explore how to translate the signs for open and put on by visualising how the actions are performed in different ways, and describe a key difference between sentence structure in English and Auslan.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, students will explore the concept of gender pressure and how it can influence the choices people make. They will learn to identify examples of gender pressure, understand why it can be unfair and limiting, and practise respectful ways to challenge it. Students will also develop their understanding of the importance of respecting how others choose to express themselves and show consideration for people’s individual choices.     

What you can do at home:

• Discuss the role of the Holy Spirit by talking about how Christians can show kindness, courage, and love in their everyday actions.
• Read together each day and encourage your child to practise reading with accuracy, expression, and fluency. Talk about new vocabulary from The Iron Man and help them identify the main idea of what they have read.
• Support your child in practising punctuation in direct speech, using the conjunctions because, but, and so, and planning simple information reports.
• Reinforce multiplication and division concepts through everyday activities such as sharing items equally, making equal groups, or solving simple word problems together.
• Encourage creativity by helping your child design characters or create simple shadow puppets to retell stories or invent their own puppet show.
• Talk about fairness, inclusion, and respecting individual choices by discussing gender stereotypes and encouraging your child to appreciate different ways people express themselves.

Important Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Tuesday 4th August - Funky Sock and Shoe Day

You may have noticed the beautiful new garden bed beside the Bethlehem Building.

A semicircle of murnong, also known as yam daisies, is beginning to grow. Murnong is an Indigenous plant that is native to our local area on Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country. The FIRE Carrier Team will continue adding seeds and caring for the garden. As a school community, we will be able to watch these important plants grow and develop over time.Planting species that belong naturally in our local environment is one way we can care for and help heal Country. The plants we are beginning with grew across this area for thousands of years before European settlement.

Plastic bottle caps needed for this Term's Integrated unit! 

Please send washed plastic bottle caps (soft drink, milk etc) to school with your child whenever possible. Your support is greatly appreciated!
