Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

This week, during math our focus was on the 2026 Commonwealth games. 

Students used worded math problems to explore the theme of the Commonwealth games.

We also continued learning about music and dance through a song written by Aunty Sharron mirii Bell called "Winhangagigilanha".  Students are reminded that we look after ourselves by caring for Country. We encourage conversations at home about looking after Country. 

Please remember that school photos will be coming up next week on the 5th of August. 

Also on Tuesday 4th August we are having a funky sock and shoe day. We can wear either a crazy pair of socks OR crazy shoes. The shoes we wear must be SAFE shoes (No thongs/sandals). We must still wear our school uniform. Please bring along a gold coin. The money raised will be going towards an organisation called ‘Opening the Doors Foundation’.

Award Winners

The week ahead:

Religious Education: Next week, students will explore how they can follow Jesus by showing kindness, helping others and making caring choices each day. Through stories and class discussions, they will learn about people who put Jesus' teachings into action by caring for others and will think about simple ways they can show love, friendship and service at home, at school and in their community.

Writing:  Next week, students will listen to the story Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Murphy. They will learn about who welcomes us to country and why.  Students will continue learning about the use of dotted thirds.

Reading:  Students will be learning ‘soft g’. g makes an /j/ sound as long as it is followed by an e, i or y.

Mathematics:  Students will continue their learning in math relating to the  Commonwealth Games. Students skip counting of 2s, 5s and 10s to find answers to different questions. We are also working on ordering numbers in ascending and descending numbers.

Integrated Curriculum:  Next week, we are continuing our work on creating different beats that are harmonious.

Social and Emotional Learning: Next week, students will be learning about fair play, including others, and recognising when rules are fair or unfair. They will practise making sure everyone feels welcome and included during games and activities.

Auslan: We are learning the signs for days and weather. Students will try to use them in a conversation.

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “How many altogether?” or “How do you know?”

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What traditions does your family, school or community celebrate?

Important Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.

• Can we please ask for a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident. 

• Tuesday 4th August - Funky Sock and Shoe Day

You may have noticed the beautiful new garden bed beside the Bethlehem Building.

A semicircle of murnong, also known as yam daisies, is beginning to grow. Murnong is an Indigenous plant that is native to our local area on Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country. The FIRE Carrier Team will continue adding seeds and caring for the garden.

 As a school community, we will be able to watch these important plants grow and develop over time.Planting species that belong naturally in our local environment is one way we can care for and help heal Country. The plants we are beginning with grew across this area for thousands of years before European settlement.
