Leadership Communication

Yesterday, it was ‘International Friendship Day’ which is a lovely opportunity to remind us of the gift of friendship, and to reflect on Jesus' call to "love one another" (John 13:34). Through this calling we are asked to build true friendships that show respect, patience, kindness and a willingness to understand and care for one another. 

At St Thomas we are extremely fortunate to have a community filled with many different faiths, and it is these commonalities that bring us together. 

In Sikhism, Guru Granth Sahib stated, “No one is my enemy, and no one is a stranger. I get along with everyone”.  Ang 1299 

In Hinduism, Maha Upanishad stated: "The world is one family." (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) Maha Upanishad 6.72

All these messages remind us that friendship, kindness and inclusion help every person feel loved, respected and valued. Therefore, our school community uses explicit teaching of our School Wide Expectations (Safety, Respect and Learning) to help our students live these shared values each day by building, maintaining and strengthening positive relationships. 

Learning Auslan at our school is another way we put our faith into action. As students learn to communicate in Auslan, they grow in empathy, celebrate the unique gifts of every person and recognise the dignity of all members of our community. It is a meaningful way to ensure every child feels seen, included and valued, while nurturing friendships that reflect God's love for all.

To celebrate the International Friendship Day, Deaf Children Australia, made us aware of their free Auslan translations of their Platypus Playhouse Book Series. Click on this link if you wish to watch these with your child(ren). They are aimed at Pre school and Early Primary School (Foundation to Year 2).

May the weekend ahead be filled with many opportunities to live out the message of “loving one another” through your personal, family and community friendships.
