Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

This week, students enjoyed a Commonwealth Games Maths activity where they used shot put results to convert fractions and find equivalent fractions in a real-world context. They also thoroughly enjoyed participating in our World Dance Incursion, exploring dance traditions from different cultures through movement and music.

We look forward to celebrating Mass with the Bethlehem community at 9:30 am on Wednesday 5th August at St Thomas the Apostle Church. All families are warmly welcome to join us.

World Dance Incursion - Tuesday 28th July 

Commonwealth Games Maths Activity - Finding Equivalent Fractions - 5B & 5C

Learning in Year 5 for Term 3:

Religious Education:

Next week in Religious Education, students will learn about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and how this teaches us to serve others with humility, kindness and love. They will explore how the tradition of foot washing reflects Jesus' example of caring for others and consider how they can live out these values each day.

English:

Next week in English, students will consolidate their information report writing by refining a body paragraph. They will focus on writing clear topic and concluding sentences, including relevant supporting details, using precise vocabulary and language features, and editing their work for cohesion, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Mathematics:

Next week, students will be learning to subtract fractions with related denominators. They will use their understanding of equivalent fractions to solve subtraction problems accurately and explain the strategies they use. By the end of the week, students will be able to confidently subtract fractions with related denominators and justify their thinking.

Integrated Curriculum:

Next week, Year 5 students will explore a variety of dance styles and discover how dance has evolved over time. They will learn about the characteristics of different dance styles, practise basic movements from each, and investigate how dance is used to communicate ideas, emotions and cultural traditions across different communities. 

Auslan:

Next week, Year 5 students will explore how Auslan has different grammar rules from English. They will learn that time signs, such as yesterday or two days ago, are placed at the beginning of a sentence, and that verbs do not change to show past tense (for example, played is signed without adding an -ed ending). Students will practise using these sentence structures to communicate clearly in Auslan. 

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week, Year 5 students will explore the concept of stereotypes and how they can influence the way people think about others. They will identify examples of gender stereotypes, discuss why stereotypes can be unfair or limiting, and recognise that every person has unique gifts, strengths and dignity. Students will also develop strategies for responding to stereotypes in fair and respectful ways. 

Important Reminders

Fidget Toys

• We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Camp to Mill Valley Ranch will be on 12th-13th October. Wednesday 14th October is a student free day for year 5. 

• Camp permissions are now available on PAM. Please complete the camp permission form as soon as possible. Within the permission form, you will find two linked forms that also need to be completed—one for camp activities and one for dietary requirements. If you are experiencing any difficulties accessing PAM, please contact our school administration team for assistance. 

  If you have any questions or concerns about camp, please don't hesitate to speak with your child's teacher.

• Tuesday 4th August - Funky Sock and Shoe Day

You may have noticed the beautiful new garden bed beside the Bethlehem Building.

A semicircle of murnong, also known as yam daisies, is beginning to grow. Murnong is an Indigenous plant that is native to our local area on Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country. The FIRE Carrier Team will continue adding seeds and caring for the garden. As a school community, we will be able to watch these important plants grow and develop over time.Planting species that belong naturally in our local environment is one way we can care for and help heal Country. The plants we are beginning with grew across this area for thousands of years before European settlement.
