Year 9 Science

We have just finished our Chemistry unit on atoms and ions, and today we began our Biology unit on reproduction and evolution. In our first lesson, we explored the parts of a flower and how flowers reproduce. We then dissected a flower to investigate its different components, such as the stamen, style, and anther. Using scalpels, we carefully removed the outer parts of the plant and examined the pollen using a magnifying glass.

Unit 3/4 Biology

As Term 2 draws to a close, all Unit 3/4 Biology students are completing Outcome 3, which involves designing and producing a scientific poster. Before working under test conditions, we first collected and analysed data from our own experiments.

Our investigation focused on the enzyme bromelain and the factors that influence its ability to break down gelatin - a structural protein found in foods like jelly. Bromelain, which occurs naturally in pineapple, is known for its protein-digesting properties.

Students designed a variety of experiments to explore how variables such as pH, temperature, and enzyme concentration affect enzyme activity.

This task gave us a valuable opportunity to apply our knowledge of enzymes and experimental design in a real-world context, while developing our skills in scientific communication.

School Holidays and Science

Looking for something to do in the upcoming winter school holidays that’s fun but still lets you engage in science? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Scienceworks

    Scienceworks Holiday Programs offer

a range of shows and programs, including a Pink Floyd Planetarium experience.

  • Swinburne University of Technology

    Swinburne Holiday Workshops

are interactive, hands-on science workshops covering topics in physics, chemistry, biology, Earth sciences, and environmental science. Workshops will be held at both the Wantirna and Hawthorn campuses.

  • Royal Australian Chemical Institute: Chemistry and Art Competition

    RACI Chemistry & Art Competition

Entries for this competition open on August 1st - why not spend some holiday time getting creative while thinking about chemistry?
