Year 6 Update

Farewell and Good Luck Mrs Elkina!
As Term 2 comes to a close, the Year 6 team would like to wish Mrs Elkina all the very best as she begins her maternity leave at the start of Term 3.
While we will certainly miss having Mrs Elkina at Hillsmeade, we are so excited for her as she prepares to welcome her beautiful baby girl. What a lucky little girl she is to be entering a world filled with so much love and to have such a fun, kind and caring mum. The students of 6E have been incredibly fortunate to learn from Mrs Elkina and will miss her greatly. We know she has made a lasting impact on her students through her warmth, dedication and sense of humour. We look forward to hearing all about the adventures of motherhood, meeting her little girl during future visits, and, of course, receiving updates on how her cats are adjusting to their new position a little further down the order of importance!
Congratulations and best wishes, Mrs Elkina. We hope this special time is filled with love, joy and plenty of precious memories.
Welcome Miss Huang!
We are excited to welcome Miss Lorraine Huang to the Hillsmeade community. Miss Huang will be joining us at the start of Term 3 and will be teaching 6E for the remainder of the year while Mrs Elkina is on maternity leave.
We know that 6E will give Miss Huang a warm Hillsmeade welcome and help her feel right at home in our school community. Miss Huang is looking forward to getting to know her students and becoming part of the many exciting learning experiences and events that make Year 6 such a special year.
We are thrilled to welcome Miss Huang to the Hillsmeade family and know she will be a wonderful addition to our team. If you see her around the school, be sure to say hello and make her feel welcome!
Welcome to Hillsmeade, Miss Huang!
Halfway Through Year 6 Party Celebrations!
On Friday 19th June, the Year 6 students had a wonderful time celebrating being halfway through their final year of primary school.
The morning was filled with classic old-school party games, including Musical Chairs, Ultimate Simon Says, Charades, Limbo, Pin the Moustache on Mr Turvey, Duck Duck Goose and Just Dance. There was plenty of laughter, excitement and friendly competition as students embraced the fun and enjoyed spending time together.
The celebrations continued with wayyyyy too much party food and an opportunity to reflect on the many memories, achievements and experiences we have shared so far this year.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students and the way they have approached the first half of the year with growth, resilience and maturity. They have embraced challenges, supported one another and made the most of the many opportunities Year 6 has to offer.
We look forward to the jam-packed adventures, learning opportunities and special events that await us in Semester Two as we continue to make the most of our final year at Hillsmeade.
Year 6 Camp Update
All spots for the Year 6 camp have now been allocated. If your child has missed out on attending the Year 6 camp, we encourage you to email the office and be put on the waiting list. If camp positions become available, they will be offered in the order that students are positioned on the waiting list.
Market Day
Throughout Term 2, our Year 6 students were busily preparing for Market Day, which was held on Thursday 25th June. As part of their Economics and Business learning, students worked collaboratively to develop business plans, identify products suited to their target audience and explore important financial concepts such as costing, profits and losses. They also designed eye-catching advertisements and creative stall fronts to help promote their businesses and attract customers on the big day.
The preparation process required students to demonstrate teamwork, problem-solving, organisation and creativity as they worked together to bring their ideas to life.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm and collaboration shown by our Year 6 students throughout this project.
STARS of the Week!
Well done to our Stars of the Week! What a great effort you are showing in class, with your work and exceptional effort in displaying our school values. What stars!
Week 9 & 10 Maths
Over the past fortnight, Year 6 students have been exploring the four quadrants of the Cartesian plane. Students have developed their understanding of plotting coordinates in all four quadrants and have practised translating points across the plane using horizontal and vertical movements.
We have also been learning about time, with a focus on reading and interpreting timetables. Students have worked on determining the duration of events using start and finish times, as well as calculating elapsed time in hours and minutes. These skills have been applied to a range of real-world scenarios, helping students build confidence in solving practical time-related problems.
It has been wonderful to see students developing their mathematical reasoning and applying their knowledge to increasingly complex challenges.
