Year 4 News

Term 2, Weeks 9 & 10

What a wonderful end to Term 2! It has been a fantastic fortnight in Year 4, full of great learning, new skills and plenty of fun. We finished the term on a real high — including a very special Pyjama Day! Read on to celebrate everything Year 4 has achieved in Weeks 9 and 10.

A Snapshot of Our Learning in Term 2: Weeks 9 & 10

English

  • This fortnight, students have started learning joined handwriting! We have been practising diagonal joins — connecting letters together with a smooth, flowing stroke. It has been wonderful to see so many students rising to the challenge and developing this exciting new skill.
  • We have continued our daily partner reading sessions, where students practise reading aloud smoothly and with expression. This is making a real difference to students’ fluency and confidence.

Text Study — Multimodal Texts

  • We have launched our new text study unit on multimodal texts — texts that use more than one way to share a message, combining words, images, layout and design.
  • Our class text is Always Was, Always Will Be, which takes us through very important moments in Australian history. Students have been learning about the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and exploring key ideas such as Country, culture and community.
  • One of the highlights has been looking at historical photographs from the past — real images that help bring history to life. These photos have sparked some wonderful and thoughtful discussions in class!

Maths

  • In Week 9, students wrapped up our Time unit by reading analogue clocks to the nearest 5 minutes and to the exact minute. Students have been practising reading and recording times in both analogue and digital formats — a very handy life skill!
  • In Week 10, we began our new unit on Area and Perimeter. Students explored perimeter (the distance around the outside of a shape) and area (the space inside a shape). Activities included designing garden beds, measuring irregular shapes with rulers, creating zoo enclosures, and calculating the area and perimeter of each letter in their own name. A fantastic and creative end to the term!

Inquiry

Students have continued exploring the theme of community and belonging — thinking about what makes a community, how people contribute to it, and why some places and people hold deep meaning. This has connected beautifully with our text study, helping students build a richer understanding of Country, culture and connection to place.

Pyjama Day — What a Success!

On Friday 19th June, Year 4 students took part in the SRC Pyjama Day fundraiser — and it was a massive success! It was so wonderful to see so many of our Year 4 students getting into the spirit of the day in their cosiest pyjamas. Thank you to all families for your generosity and support. What a joyful way to end the term!

Homework Reminders

Reading

Please continue to encourage your child to read over the holidays. The break is a great opportunity to enjoy a book for pleasure!

Spelling

There is no spelling homework over the holidays. We will pick up again next term.

Thank you so much for your wonderful support throughout Term 2. We hope you and your family enjoy a pleasant and well-deserved rest over the holidays. We look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed and ready for Term 3!
