Year 6 Update
Year 6 students have continued to build on their learning and it has been wonderful to see their confidence and independence growing across all areas.
Reading
In Reading, students have been strengthening their comprehension by focusing on key strategies that help them make meaning from texts. A big focus has been visualisation, where students create mental images while reading to better understand the text. They have also been practising monitoring their reading, recognising when something does not make sense and stopping to apply strategies to fix their understanding. When students get stuck, they are learning to ask questions, reread sections, and use context clues to help them work through challenging parts of a text. It has been great to see students becoming more aware of their own thinking as readers.
Writing
In Writing, we have been exploring poetry. Students have been looking closely at how poets use language features, structure and rhyming patterns to make their writing more engaging and meaningful. A key focus has been learning how to “show, not tell” by using descriptive vocabulary and imagery to help the reader picture and feel what is being described. Students have enjoyed experimenting with creative language and sharing their poems with others in the class.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have been working on fractions and decimals, exploring how these concepts connect and how they can be represented in different ways. Through problem-solving activities and class discussions, students have been building their understanding and becoming more confident when explaining their mathematical thinking.
Looking Ahead
We are looking forward to some exciting events coming up over the next few weeks. One highlight will be the Athletics Carnival in Week 8, where students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of events and demonstrate great teamwork and sportsmanship. There are also several other fun learning experiences and activities coming up that students are eager to be involved in.
