Amazing 5/6
From the Teachers
It has been a very busy couple of weeks in 5/6! We were very proud of all our hard-working Year 5 students for completing NAPLAN to the very best of their ability.
On Monday, our 5/6 students walked to the local kindergarten and had their first kinder buddies experience for the year. The Year 6s loved getting to see their old buddies, and the Year 5s enjoyed meeting theirs for the first time. The students played games, made crafts, and got to know their buddies’ interests.
The students are also greatly looking forward to the Lightning Premiership coming up this week, as they have been making great strides in their sport — even running student-led extra training sessions at break times!
Learning Focuses
Literacy – Descriptive Narrative Writing
In Literacy, our focus has been on creating descriptive and engaging narratives. Students have started by planning a brand-new chapter that follows on from the novel we have studied this term, The Callers. The focus has been on maintaining the language, characters, and world established in the novel, while encouraging students to tackle one of the unanswered questions it leaves.
Mathematics – Multiplication & Order of Operations
In Mathematics, our focus areas are multiplication, division, and order of operations. The Year 5 students have been learning and practising different multiplication and division strategies, including the area model, associative property, and written algorithms. In Year 6, students have been learning about BIDMAS (the order of operations).
History – Colonisation In Inquiry, students have been learning about the history of colonisation. They recently explored the Inca Empire, the Spanish conquistadors, and the legend of the mysterious city of gold, El Dorado. We even had some ambitious students request to move this year’s camp to South America so they could begin a quest for the lost city!
