In Visual Arts, students have continued to develop their understanding of line, shape, colour, and pattern through a range of engaging and creative learning experiences. They were also introduced to primary and secondary colours through paint mixing activities.
Foundation students learnt about ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) β the colours of the rainbow. They explored the three primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) and how to mix them to create secondary colours (orange, green, and purple). Students began creating their ROYGBIV rainbow clouds, using only primary colours and then mixing them to form secondary colours directly on their paper.
Year 1/2 students completed their line and pattern artworks from last week. They also revised their understanding of primary colours and how these combine to make secondary colours. Students began a flower collage, first painting three circles using primary colours. They then folded A3 paper into thirds and mixed colours to create secondary colours in each section, preparing for their collage work next week.
Year 3/4 students completed their Kandinsky-inspired concentric circle tree collages. They revised their understanding of primary and secondary colours by mixing paints using only the primary colours. Students created six painted colour blobs (red, blue, yellow, orange, green, and purple), then used fine liners to transform these shapes into imaginative characters.
Year 5/6 students completed their hybrid animal sculptures, adding paint and creative details to enhance their designs. They also created line and pattern artworks, choosing from optical illusion (Op Art), zentangle, or shading techniques. These artworks will be transformed into collaborative 3D cubes for our Art Show later in the year.
Many students have been excited to participate in the Westfield Southland Motherβs Day Wrapping Paper Design Competition. Students have demonstrated wonderful creativity and design skills while developing their unique pattern ideas.

Keeping with the theme of striking and fielding, students in years 2 have been introduced to the game of teeball, while students in years 3-6 have had a chance to develop their skills further after being introduced to teeball last year.
Week 1 had a focus on catching and throwing and then hitting off the tee. With the throwing, there was a focus on throwing accurately, but also with some power, getting side on to their partner and following through.
With the batting, the focus was on hitting with a horizontal swing, flat and hard. All students did a good job in following the techniqueβs and had a great time. We will continue to develop these skills over the next couple of weeks.
Due to the rain on Tuesday, this week students in years 3-6 moved indoors and had a session of volleyball. Students were taught about how to dig a ball, how to set a ball, serving and the basic rules. Students had a great time developing these challenging skills.
The Preps and year 1 students have had a focus on teamwork. They have worked with a partner to throw a big ball to them so develop their catching skills. They then turned around and rolled the ball through their legs to their partner to get ready to play tunnel ball. After the initial skill development, students were put in to small teams where they could develop their teamwork and ball skills to play tunnel ball first as an introduction, then as a competitive game.Β
It was exciting to see all students across all year levels improve their skills and understandings of the games.

Interschool Sports
Throughout term 1, students in years 5 and 6 have competed in a number of sports for interschool sports including teeball, volleyball and hot shots tennis.
We have had a pretty successful term in regards to wins and being competitive, with the mixed and girls teeball teams going through undefeated, while the mixed tennis won all games except one. The girls tennis and mixed volleyball both had a couple of wins.
However, again the most pleasing element of our interschool sports teams is the sportsmanship and encouragement not only of our own players, but also of our opposing schools. I am very proud of the reputation our school has created and again our students continue to lead the way in this area.
This week, after the term of competition, we now have a focus on the Lightning Premiership. An exciting full day of sport, where the students compete against all the other schools in a round robin competition. It will be a great day and we wish all the students luck for the day.

House Cross Country β Tuesday 24th March
Next Tuesday we again hold our annual house cross country event. This event is held on and around the Le Page Park ovals, next to the school. It is a great, fun afternoon of competition and excitement as all students from Prep to year 6 get a chance to run and dress up in their house colours. Students in prep-2 will run around the oval once or twice, while students in years 3-6 run around the outside of the park on the footpath for either 2km or 3km depending on their age.
Β
The winning students in the age groups of under 9/10 to under 12βs will move through to the Kingston District Cross Country competition to be held towards the start of term 2.
Family and friends are more than welcome to come along and support your child and friends for the House competition. We look forward to seeing you there.
