Wonderful 1

One-derful Class Chronicles
Term 1 Week 8 2026 - Friday 20th March
What have we been up to?
We have had a busy couple of weeks and are well and truly in the full swing of learning lots of new things! We are looking forward to cross country next week, if you need to check your house colour, please send me an email.
In Reading and Writing, we are continuing our exploration of adventure narratives, focusing on The Snail and the Whale. Students are building comprehension skills such as making connections and retelling events, and are beginning to plan their own narratives using familiar structures and language features.
In Maths, we are developing our understanding of place value through hands-on activities. Students are working with tens and ones, subitising, partitioning numbers, and comparing and ordering numbers up to 120.
In Inquiry, students are learning about local places in our Geography unit by exploring natural, managed and built features, how places change over time, and how people, including First Nations Australians, care for them. They are sharing their learning through maps, drawings and discussions.
A friendly reminder to please send through a family photo for our Family Wall if you haven’t already. Thank you!
If you ever need anything please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at madeleine.simos@education.vic.gov.au

Reading & WritingWe will continue exploring Adventure Narratives and begin writing our own narratives. Students will use the language features and structure we have learnt through our picture book studies to guide their writing. They will focus on creating characters, settings, and simple story events that follow a clear beginning, middle, and end. Students will also practise adding descriptive language to make their stories more engaging and interesting for the reader.
Maths
Over the next fortnight, we will begin exploring addition and subtraction through hands-on learning experiences. Students will practise partitioning numbers into parts, including breaking numbers into two and three groups, and use concrete materials to support their understanding. We will also focus on number bonds to 20 and develop subitising skills to help students recognise quantities quickly. Students will label and describe groups to explain their thinking and build confidence in communicating their mathematical ideas.
InquiryIn our Year 1 Geography unit, Local Places: Natural, Managed & Constructed, students explore special places in their local area. They learn about natural, managed, and built features, how places change over time, and how people, including First Nations Australians, care for them. Students will ask questions, create maps, and share their discoveries through drawings and explanations. The unit includes hands-on activities, stories, and resources to make learning about places fun and engaging.
