Tremendous 3

Term 1 Week 8
Year 3 Newsletter
Welcome to Week 8 of Term 1!
Literacy:
In Literacy, students have begun planning and writing their own action-adventure narratives inspired by Nim’s Island. They have been thinking carefully about the characters, setting, problem and solution in their stories. Students have come up with fantastic and imaginative ideas, including exciting problems for their characters to face and clever ways to solve them. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and effort students are putting into their writing. We are very proud of the work they have produced so far and are looking forward to seeing their stories typed up, edited and published once they are finished.
Phonics:
This week in Phonics, students have been learning about homophones and the “or” sound. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, and students have been practising how to choose the correct word for each sentence. We explored examples such as paws/pours, discussing how the meaning of the sentence helps us decide which spelling to use. For example, Dogs have paws and She pours a glass of juice each morning. Students completed reading, spelling and sentence activities to help strengthen their understanding of these words and when to use them correctly. This work helps students become more confident with spelling patterns, vocabulary and meaning in context.
