Literacy
We have been building our understanding of spelling patterns and sounds. We have been focusing on the /l/ sound using patterns such as l, ll, al, el, il, le, ol and the /or/ sound with patterns including or, aw, a, ar, au, al. We have been applying these patterns through word study, spelling activities, and writing tasks.
In Reading, we have begun exploring Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. We have been making predictions using clues from the text and discussing the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of characters, particularly Jamal and Bibi, as they navigate life in a warzone. We also engaged in a powerful empathy task, imagining what it would be like to make a life-changing decision to save someone we love, prompting us to reflect on courage, resilience, and personal strengths.
In Writing, we are developing our skills in using adverbial phrases, strong topic sentences, and clear paragraph structure to organise and enhance our ideas. We have had a strong focus on making writing more detailed and engaging for our readers.
Maths
In Maths, we have been developing a strong understanding of decimal place value, extending our knowledge to include numbers to the thousandths place. We are learning how each digit in a number has a different value depending on its position, and how this helps us read, write, and compare decimals accurately.
We have also been exploring the important connection between fractions and decimals, recognising that both represent parts of a whole in different ways. We are beginning to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages and use this understanding to solve real-world problems involving money, measurements, and quantities.
Through hands-on activities, number lines, and problem-solving tasks, we are building confidence in explaining our thinking and justifying our answers. We have been focusing on using mathematical language, recognising patterns in place value, and developing fluency when working with increasingly complex decimal numbers.
