Year 2

Welcome back to Term 2! It has been a fantastic start in our Year 2 classroom, with students returning settled, focused, and ready to learn. We are looking forward to a busy term filled with engaging learning experiences across all areas. Thank you for your continued support—we’re excited for a great term ahead!
Literacy:
This term, our reading focus will centre on the works of Bob Graham. We will begin with his book The Concrete Garden, exploring how illustrations add meaning to a story. Students will learn how images help us make predictions and infer deeper understanding, supporting them to become thoughtful and engaged readers.
Maths:
Students have been learning to recognise, describe, and create repeating and growing patterns using numbers, shapes, and objects. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, they are developing their ability to identify rules in patterns and explain their thinking, building a strong foundation for algebraic thinking.
Next, our Year 2 students will begin exploring fractions, with a focus on understanding that a half represents two equal parts of a whole. Students will consolidate their learning by showing halves in different ways—using shapes, collections, and everyday objects. Through hands-on activities and discussions, they will build confidence in recognising and explaining how a whole can be shared equally.
Science:
This term in Science, our Year 2 students will be exploring the concept of sound. They will investigate how sound is made, how it travels, and how we hear it. Through hands-on experiments and engaging activities, students will explore vibrations, pitch, and volume, building their understanding of how sound works in the world around them.
Health:
This term in Health, our Year 2 students will investigate a range of health messages and practices in their community and discuss their purposes. As part of this, we will also explore what makes a healthy lunchbox and why this is important for our learning and energy levels. Students will consider different food choices and how they help our bodies stay focused, active, and ready to learn throughout the day.
ANZAC Day:
Our Year 2 students spent time learning about the meaning of Anzac Day and why it is important. We read picture story books and explored the significance of symbols such as poppies, slouch hats, and rosemary. To show their understanding, students created their own badges to wear on the day, demonstrating respect and appreciation for those who have served.
