Year 3/4A

Year 3/4 Classroom Update

Students in Year 3/4 have made a strong start to the term, engaging in purposeful and connected learning across all subject areas.

In Reading and Writing, students have commenced a new unit on information reports, with a rich focus on the context of Ancient Greece. As part of this unit, students are exploring how factual texts are structured and written to inform the reader. They have been reading and analysing Ancient Greece and the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne and Meet the Ancient Greeks by James Davies. Through these texts, students are identifying key features of information reports, including headings, subheadings, topic-specific vocabulary, and the organisation of facts into clear sections. The purpose of this learning is to support students in understanding how to research, organise and present factual information clearly and effectively. Students will apply these skills to plan and create their own information reports, demonstrating their ability to communicate knowledge in a structured and engaging way.

In Mathematics, students spent the first week of term exploring the concept of multiplication, with a particular focus on vertical algorithms. Students have been learning how to represent multiplication problems in a clear, organised format, supporting accuracy when working with larger numbers. They have also been developing their understanding of multiplication as repeated addition and making connections between different strategies. The purpose of this learning is to build strong foundational number skills, enabling students to approach more complex mathematical problems with confidence and efficiency.

In Civics and Citizenship, students have been learning about the importance of rules and consequences, as well as developing an understanding of the difference between rules and laws. Through discussions and practical examples, students have explored why rules are needed in different settings, such as at school and in the community, and how they help to keep people safe and ensure fairness. Students have also begun to consider how laws are created and enforced, and why they are important in maintaining order in society. The purpose of this learning is to help students develop a sense of responsibility, fairness and active citizenship, while understanding their role within both the school community and the wider world.

Our 3/4 students have also been learning about the origins of ANZAC Day, with a particular focus on the Gallipoli Campaign. Through this unit, students have explored the events surrounding the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli in 1915, and why this moment is considered significant in our nation’s history. Students have discussed the qualities of the ANZAC soldiers, including courage, resilience and mateship, and reflected on why ANZAC Day continues to be commemorated each year. The purpose of this learning is to develop students’ understanding of important historical events, while fostering respect and appreciation for those who have served and sacrificed for their country.

It has been wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully with their learning and making strong connections across different areas of the curriculum.
