Qantas Incursion
On Wednesday 19 August, the Year 12 Business Management students had the opportunity to participate in an informative and engaging incursion led by Chantelle, a change manager from Qantas. Rather than simply learning about change management from a textbook, we were given an insight into how these ideas are applied within a real organisation.
Chantelle shared her experiences working on Qantas’ Project Sunrise, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the planning, teamwork and communication involved in preparing for such a major change. The session was particularly interesting as it showed how a project of this scale involves many different people, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers and airport staff, all working together towards a common goal.
One of the highlights of the incursion was gaining a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes of an airline and how much preparation goes into introducing something as significant as a new aircraft and ultra-long-haul flights. We were able to see how Qantas uses training, simulations, feedback and collaboration to prepare its employees, while also considering the wellbeing of both staff and passengers.
The experience provided a valuable connection between what we learn in Business Management and how it operates in the real world, while also giving us the opportunity to hear directly from someone working within the industry.
Overall, the incursion was an engaging and eye-opening experience that gave students a greater appreciation of the complexity involved in managing large-scale organisational change.
