Book Week at St Augustine’s College
During Book Week we celebrated each lunchtime with activities for the students from building tiny houses to making magical creatures from modelling clay. In class, students discovered the winners of the Book of the Year Awards and compared them to the votes we recorded for the books on the shortlist. Students were surprised by the Judges Choices even though the Student Shadow Judges picked very similar to our choices. The Early Childhood winner for St Augustine’s was Concrete Garden but the CBCA judges selected Gymnastica Fantastica. The Picture Book winner for us was That Bird Has Arms while the judges selected Timeless. The one category where we agreed with the Judges from the CBCA was in the chapter book or Younger Readers category where Scar Town was the winning book.
On Friday 23rd August the College was awash with book characters. Students went all out, really thinking about the characters from books that they wanted to dress up as. We had Wolf Girl from Anh Do, the creature from Where the Wild Things Are, a Monster Truck driver, Ella and Olivia, Jack and the Beanstalk, a Hot Wheels driver, Pig the Pug, Mr Men and Little Miss, Pow Pow Pig, Mary Poppins, Claris (the mouse) and so many more.
Thank you to the many students who got dressed up for our Book Parade. It was terrific to see so many of the students having fun. The costumes ranged from football and soccer players to mermaids, minions, pirates and superheroes, Harry Potter characters to squishmallows. The number who were dressed as book characters was impressive. If you haven't had a chance to see the Book Week video where we combined the photos together, you can watch it here.
The winner of our Book Week Colouring-in Competition was Elisha M in Year 3. There were two winners in the Writing Competition with Grace C in Year 4 and Hudson B in Year 5 writing colour poems. There were many students who made amazing magical creatures from materials in the Library on Thursday 22nd August. The winners were Lacey L in Year 4, Samuel B and Arianna W in Year 2 and Poppy B in Year 1. Each won a book and small toy as a prize. The Year 3 RD class won our Guess the Teacher’s Favourite Book Competition for F-6. Harry Shadget won our 7-12 Guess the Teacher’s Favourite Book Competition winning a voucher for the canteen. We also ran a staff competition with a four way tie.
