Thriving in Year Three

Take a Stand: Allies for Inclusion
Hello Year 3 families!
In our classrooms, we have just started our new Inquiry unit called 'Taking a Stand: Allies for Inclusion'.
We have been exploring the concept of social justice and learning that this simply means fairness to all people. The children have been having some incredible discussions about what it means to be a bystander when someone is being treated badly. We read a beautiful book called Say Something and talked about how we can be brave and take a stand against injustice.
We also looked at what it means to be an ally. We learned that an ally is a supporter! All of this learning ties in perfectly with our Catholic values as we encourage the students to show kindness, compassion and love to everyone in our community just as Jesus taught us.
Here are a few simple ways you can help reinforce this learning at home:
- Ask your child to explain what a bystander is and what they could do to take a stand instead.
- Talk about the word justice and discuss what fairness looks like in your own home or at weekend sports.
- Discuss times when it might be a bit scary to speak up for a friend and brainstorm a few brave words they could use in those moments.
Notice and celebrate when your child is being an excellent ally to their siblings, friends or somebody who accesses the world in a different way to them.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students become such wonderful and inclusive young people!
Warmly,
The Year 3 Teachers
