VCE/VET Sport,        Aquatic & Recreation

By: Eliza McNulty

Our Unit 2 VET Sport Aquatic & Recreation students recently had the fantastic opportunity to put their knowledge and practical skills into action by volunteering at the Warrandyte Primary School Athletics Day.

The day provided students with valuable real-world experience in planning, setting up and delivering sporting activities for primary school students. Before the events began, the VET students worked together to set up the athletics area and prepare each event, ensuring that equipment and spaces were ready for the day.

Throughout the day, students took responsibility for running a range of athletics events. Working in pairs, they managed triple jump, long jump, shot put, discus and high jump, and then worked together as a team to run the hurdles and track events. Students were responsible for explaining activities, supporting participants, managing equipment and helping events run smoothly.

This experience allowed students to develop a range of important skills that are directly relevant to the Sport & Recreation industry, including communication, teamwork, leadership, organisation, time management and working with younger participants. They also had to adapt to the different needs and abilities of the primary school students, encouraging them and helping them understand how to participate safely and confidently.

It was great to see students take ownership of their allocated events and work collaboratively throughout the day. The experience demonstrated the importance of clear communication and teamwork when delivering a sporting event, as well as the responsibility involved in ensuring activities are safe, organised and enjoyable for all participants.

Volunteering at the Athletics Day also gave our students the opportunity to contribute to the wider school community and gain an authentic insight into what it is like to work in a sporting environment. Their efforts helped support the successful running of the day and provided the primary school students with enthusiastic and positive role models throughout their events.

A big thank you to our Unit 2 VET Sport & Aquatic Recreation students for their enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment throughout the day. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented Warrandyte High School and look forward to seeing them continue to develop their skills through future practical experiences.
