Year One Newsletter – Week 6
This fortnight in Literacy, our Grade One students have been exploring the different ways the long /ee/ sound can be represented in words. We have focused on the letter patterns 'y' and 'ey', learning that these can make the /ee/ sound at the end of words, such as happy, funny, key, and monkey. Students have been practising reading, spelling and writing words with these patterns through games, shared reading and writing activities, helping to build their confidence and decoding skills.
In Mathematics, we have been learning about sharing and grouping. Students have been using hands-on materials to explore how objects can be shared equally between groups and how collections can be grouped into equal sets. Through engaging activities and games, they have developed their understanding of equal groups and strengthened the foundation for future multiplication and division concepts.
In Inquiry, we have begun our Media Arts unit. We are exploring the different types of media and thinking about the purposes they serve. We are learning to recognise how media can be used to communicate ideas, share information, entertain and influence others.
In Religion, we are exploring the story of Creation and thinking about what God has made. We are also reflecting on the wonderful gifts and talents that God has given each of us and how we can use these gifts to make a positive difference in the world.
During Sport, we continue to prepare for our upcoming School Athletics Carnival. We have been developing our skills, building our confidence and encouraging one another as we practise. We think we are going to be an incredible team of sportspeople on the day! We can't wait to show our perseverance, teamwork and school spirit.
We are also looking forward to seeing the children dressed up for our Book Week Parade on Tuesday!!
Year 2
Religion:
The students are currently learning about "Let's care for Creation." Students will have the opportunity to describe where they see and experience the wonder of God’s creation and express why it is important to care for God's creation.
Numeracy:
We continue to work through our math unit on Shape. The students will revise the names of 2D and 3D shapes and will be asked to recall their main properties. Students will sort the shapes and build a cityscape using both 2D and 3D shapes. Children will conclude this unit or work by completing an assessment next week.
Literacy:
In Literacy we have been reading the story of “Zoo” by Anthony Browne. The children enjoyed listening to this story. Students had the opportunity to write a persuasive text, identifying reasons why animals should/ shouldn’t be kept in a zoo. During spelling time, we have been focusing on contractions.
Please continue to work on the tricky word lists that were sent home and continue to support your child with their home reading.
Inquiry Learning – Media Arts:
Our new topic for Inquiry is Media Arts. During this topic, children will name forms of media and how it communicates, demonstrate their understanding of drawing, complete a storyboard with sequence, and create a character and setting. Students are learning to look closely at pictures as these can be used to communicate ideas and tell stories.
Sport:
During sport time, the students have been practicing many of the events that they will compete in on Athletics Day. Please encourage your child to try their personal best when training for this day.
Book Week for our school will be celebrated on Tuesday 25th August. We look forward to seeing many book characters at school. Children will participate in a parade at 9.00 am and additional Book Week activities throughout the day.
