Foundation Learning Community

Week 6 

It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through another term! The students' learning is progressing beautifully, and they should all be very proud of the wonderful things they can now do. It has been fantastic to see their confidence and skills continue to grow. 

📅 Important Dates 

📚 Book Week Parade – Tuesday, August 25th 

The children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We would love for families to come along and join us for the Book Week Parade in the Josephinum. 

🏃 Athletics Day – Friday 28th August 

Students can wear a splash of colour to represent their house team. We look forward to a fun day of cheering, participating and showing our school spirit! 

🐭 Maggie Mouse's Birthday Surprise – Tuesday, September 2nd 

You will have seen an invitation in your child's reader folder for Maggie Mouse's special birthday celebration! 

To celebrate all the letters we have learned, the children are invited to come to school dressed as one of our Letter Characters. Please refer to our last newsletter for some wonderful costume inspiration from last year's Foundation students. 

We also ask that each child brings a small plate of party food to share with the class. 

This will be a very special and fun celebration for the children, who have worked incredibly hard throughout the year with their learning! 

📖 Home Reading 

A huge congratulations on all the home reading you are doing with your children! It really does make such a difference. As the books become more complex, it is particularly beneficial for the children to recognise their tricky words automatically. Please continue practising these words at home whenever you can. 

Thank you for your continued support with home reading—it is wonderful to see the progress the children are making! 

🔢 Mathematics 

We will be finishing our Measurement Unit next week. The children have certainly enjoyed all of our hands-on measuring activities, particularly using scales and experimenting with different water containers. 

We will then begin learning about making groups and sharing, developing the children's understanding of early multiplication and division concepts through practical activities. 

🌏 Inquiry 

What a busy term we are having with Inquiry! Each week, we are exploring two exciting areas: Geography and Media Arts. 

In Media Arts, the children have been creating their own characters and designing settings for a story. We are looking forward to hearing the storylines they develop for the wonderful characters they have created! 

In Geography, we have been exploring our local area and identifying places that are important to our community. We will soon begin introducing maps and learning more about Australia and our place within it.
