Prep - Year 2 Updates

Prep

During Literacy, the Prep students are now learning about consonant digraphs. They will be able to explain this by telling you that it is when ‘two letters make one sound’, for example ‘ck’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’.  They are also developing their understanding of different forms of punctuation and are practicing recognising and using question marks, exclamation marks and the possessive apostrophe correctly in their reading and writing.

Beginning this week and continuing for the rest of this term, the students will focus on building their understanding of sharing and group during Mathematics lessons. They will explore the concept of fairness in distribution by connecting equal shares to real-world examples. They will learn to identify the specific amount in each equal share or group through counting and using precise mathematical language.

During Religion, the students are learning that the Church is the community of people who believe in God and who gather together to  celebrate Mass and give thanks. They are beginning to reflect on the different parts of the Mass and are focusing on some reasons why people gather to celebrate Mass.

Year 1

It has been a busy fortnight in Year 1. The students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Book Week Parade and related activities throughout last week. The students were extra excited about the Book Fair that was taking place right outside our classroom. We were all captivated by the jungle theme and felt motivated to read more! This is reflected in the fact that the whole class has now completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge! In Religion, the students have been exploring the Holy Family, consisting of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They have enjoyed learning more about Jesus’ birth and making connections between His family and their own. Learning about Joseph has also tied it well with Father’s Day coming up this weekend. We look forward to the last couple of weeks of Term 3 and celebrating all our fabulous learning so far.

Year 2

This fortnight in Year 2, we loved celebrating Book Week. The students looked fantastic in their costumes and enjoyed all the fun and excitement throughout the day. In Little Learners, we have been revising the /ear/ sound, which can be spelt using ear, eer and ere. This week, we also explored different spellings for the short /i/ sound, including y, ui, u and e. During Writing, students have been learning about the structure of a narrative and practising how to plan and brainstorm ideas for their own stories. We have been focusing on making our writing more interesting by describing how characters are feeling and using strong describing words. In Mathematics, we have continued our learning on shapes and their properties. This week, students began exploring and comparing 3D shapes. A big thank you to all families who joined us for assembly. The students worked hard to prepare what they wanted to share and they presented with confidence! During Religion, the students have been learning about the beginning of the Catholic Church. They are learning about how the Church is the people who love Jesus, follow his teachings and gather as a community.
