Teaching and Learning

Thank you to all our families for supporting Book Week. Our students looked wonderful in their costumes. It was fantastic to see everyone sharing their love of reading and celebrating our Stella school community. The parade was a highlight of the day, with students proudly and confidently showing their costumes to the whole school.
Congratulations to our Best Dressed students from each year level:
Prep: Kiri and Billy
Year 1: Harry S and Benji
Year 2: Clodagh and Oscar
Year 3: Xavier and Chloe
Year 4: Angus and Mila
Year 5: Ella and Harvey
Year 6: All of the boys as Dalmatians and Olivia as Cruella de Vil
Thank you again for helping make Book Week such a joyful celebration of reading and creativity.
Phonics Screen Year 1 and 2
This term all of our Year 1 students have been participating in the Phonics
Screening Check where they sit down with their classroom teacher for a short
phonics assessment. Phonics is a foundation for reading, spelling and writing,
and is one of The Big Six components of reading. The check confirms whether
students are developing the phonic knowledge necessary for literacy success. The data
guides teachers to refine phonics instruction and implement
timely, targeted support where needed.
This year for the first time, the Department for Education has introduced Phonics
Screening Check for Year 2 students who scored under 28 in their Year 1
Phonics Screen. Our Year 2 teachers have assessed these students on their
phonics development over the last 12 months and will also use this information
to guide their teaching and support to these students moving forward.
Please speak with your Year 1 or Year 2 teacher if you would like to know any
more information about this assessment and how your child achieved.
