Dear Foundation families,

What a fabulous start to Term 3! All the students have settled back into the classroom routine and have confidently transitioned between specialist classes. We have enjoyed hearing all about their holiday experiences and the memories they made.

Literacy

The students have been practicing writing simple CVC words using our new vowel sound /e/, letter 'e', and sound /n/, letter 'n'. They also practiced reading CVC and irregular words, such as you, was, the, and to.

Last week at SFX, we celebrated NAIDOC Week by reading Somebody's Land by Adam Goodes. This story provided a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived and cared for Country for thousands of years. Before reading, students analysed the cover illustration to predict the plot, drawing their ideas and practicing writing the title. They also explored repetition in fiction, enthusiastically identifying key phrases and joining in as the story was read aloud! Later in the week, the students listened to Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothes by Judi Barrett. There were plenty of giggles discussing why clothes aren't suitable for animals, after which everyone drew and labelled their favourite animal from the book.

In Maths, the Foundation students have been using hands-on materials to represent addition number stories. They are learning how to identify the individual "parts" of a story and combine them to find the "whole" larger number. Last Wednesday, the students brought this to life by retelling part of the story of The Gingerbread Man using two gingerbread men, buttons, and the greedy fox to practice their adding skills!

Religious Education

This fortnight, Foundation students have been learning about St Francis Xavier, our school's patron saint, and how they can follow his example by sharing God's love through kindness, helping others and including everyone. Students particularly enjoyed taking part in a peaceful beach meditation, imagining they were meeting St Francis Xavier by the sea, and they each took home a shell as a reminder to share God's love every day. Together, we also created a special classroom prayer table to celebrate the life and example of St Francis Xavier.
