GWR Cross Country

A strong team of 25 Cross Country runners headed to Warrnambool to the new track at Reid oval. With the weather looking a little bleak early in the morning, there were some concerned faces. However the sun broke through the clouds making for a perfect day for running.

Each student completed strongly with 4 age groups finishing in the top 4 teams. A huge effort by all. Congratulations to Matilda Mason, Archie Templeton, Josh Grant and Gwyneth Homer. We wish them all the best as they head to Yarra Glen to compete at the State Cross Country in mid July.

GWR Football – Senior and Intermediate Boys

On Tuesday the 6th of June, Monivae had 23 very keen Year 9 and 10 footballers venture off to Marty Busch Reserve Sebastopol, Ballarat, for the GWR Football Carnival. The day consisted of two short matches for all competing teams, who were separated into in pools A and B. Each of the matches consisted of 2 x 15-minute halves. The winner of pools A and B would ultimately play off in a Final.

Our first game of the day was against Trinity College, Colac, and the boys quickly realised we had a contest on our hands. After a tight match across both halves, we ultimately managed to come out on top and won 24-16. For our second match, we played against Emmanuel College, Warrnambool, who came out in the first half and put on a dominant display that we simply couldn’t match. To the credit of our boys, they didn’t drop their heads and lose their composure, and ultimately in the second half managed to come from behind and win 26-20. Winning both of our two pool games meant we progressed into the final, which would be played against Mercy Regional College, Camperdown, who finished on top of the other pool. We came out in the first half of this game and played the best football we’d put together all day, which couldn't have been timelier. Despite Mercy coming back a bit in the second half, we answered again and eventually won this final 48-25.

Across the day, we had a significant amount of fantastic individual performers, with every single player contributing and having their moments at different stages throughout the three matches which was excellent. Some of the better players overall included Hunter Van Someren and Hugh Fitzgerald who both played very well throughout the midfield all day, as well as up forward at stages. Jack Sobey, Lachlan Bourke, Brodie Phillips and Hamish Myers were all fantastic across the day in our backline, not only with their solid defensive work but also providing plenty offensive play for us. Zac Elliot and Archie Page were both also great throughout the midfield for the majority of the day, having their own stages of dominance across the three matches.

Term 3 sports

Term 3 starts is a bang with the following sports being played in the first week:

  • Yr 7 & 8 boys GD football, GWR Senior Hockey
  • NV Netball Yr 12 girls and Yr 7/8 boys
  • GD Yr 9/10 basketball
  • Clay Target Team training – date to be confirmed.

A huge thank you to the staff that have been working tirelessly with students and also behind the scenes. The Netball coaching team – Ms. Couchman, Ms. Keath, Belinda Carroll and Nyah Bester have worked with the netballers at lunchtime with training and team selection. Mr. Fehsler has been organising the training and selection of the Yr 7/8 boys football team. Mrs. Rowe has been working with the senior girls hockey team.  More information will be sent out regarding the Yr 9/10 basketball team so I ask that the students keep an eye on their emails over the holidays.
