La Trobe University Centre of Cardiovascular Biology and Disease Research

Work Experience 14th to 17th Nov.

Nada and Mansour completed a week of work experience with this department and participated in the following tasks:

  • Observed rodent mini-pump and blood pressure measurements
  • Observing rodent deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) surgeries
  • Observing and assisting microbiology students
  • Honing their pipetting skills and running their own PCR gel
  • Attended the Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology Symposium where they watched PhD students in the departments present their work.

Both Nada and Mansour had such an interesting time learning all these skills and playing with the mice used for research. They also learnt that the mice are looked after very well and are handled humanely.

This experience was a terrific introduction to the world of medical research. We hope it has helped clarify any career direction they have been considering.

Their supervisor Henry Diep was very pleased with our mature, sensible, and interested students. What a credit to Lalor North Secondary College.
