2017 Netball Victoria

Schools Championships Finals Day

On Tuesday 12 September, our Lilydale High School Intermediate Boys Netball team played in the Netball Schools Championship Finals Day.

This is one of the largest netball tournaments conducted in Australia and attracts Government, Catholic and Independent school teams from around the state.

Teams play in a round robin format across multiple preliminary days throughout Victoria, with the top teams advancing to 'Finals Day' at the State Netball Hockey Centre, where the State Champions are crowned.

The Finals Day

Our Intermediate Boys had to play 10 rounds of netball, playing each school twice in their pool.

Each pool match consisted of two 6-minute halves with no break at half time.

Some games played outside in wet and slippery conditions. Other matches played indoors on the show courts.

Round 1: Lilydale High School V Aquinas College (Won 8-5)

Round 2: Lilydale High School V St Joseph’s College (Won 9-2)

Round 3: Lilydale High School V McKinnon Secondary College (Drew 6-6)

Round 4: Lilydale High School V Saint Ignatius College (Won 10-4)

Round 5: Lilydale High School V Flinders College (Won 15-6)

Round 6: Lilydale High School V Aquinas College (Won 9-2)

Round 7: Lilydale High School V St Joseph’s College (Won 8-3)

Round 8: Lilydale High School V McKinnon Secondary College (Won 7-3)

Round 9: Lilydale High School V Saint Ignatius College (Won 6-1)

Round 10: Lilydale High School V Flinders College (Won 11-10)

At the conclusion of the pool matches, points were awarded for win/loss will rank teams. The highest percentage determines ladder placing.

Lilydale High School finished top of the table at the end of the pool matches. This put them through to the semi-finals where they played the team that finished fourth.

Semi Final

Lilydale High School V Flinders College

(Won 17 – 3).

In the Grand Final, we faced McKinnon Secondary College. We had drawn with them in round three and played a low scoring game in round eight. Their players were to prove to be a tough opposition.

LHS started with the centre pass, but within moments, the opposition turned the ball over and scored first. Having the next centre pass, McKinnon converted and were two goals up.  Our boys lifted and with some fantastic overall court defence and great work in and around the goal ring, we led at half time.

In the second half the opposition narrowed our lead but we remained calm, continued to play with determination and held them off for victory.

Grand Final

Lilydale High School V McKinnon Secondary College (Won 10 – 7).

Not only had our boys won the Intermediate State School Championships trophy the previous week, they are now the OUTSTANDING Netball Victoria School Champions.

Well done BOYS!

Year 10 Sports Coaching Class

On Thursday 14 September, Kelsey Currie's Year 10 Sports Coaching class had their first joint session with 8 students from Yarra Ranges Special Development School (YRSDS).

The session focused on dribbling and ball control. It was great to see LHS put their theoretical knowledge of coaching into practice with the YRSDS students.

More notably, it was even better seeing the two schools come together and support each other’s learning.

Thanks to YRSDS for coming to our school.  We are already looking forward to next week’s session.
