The end of the school year is fast approaching; however the Year 5 students have shown no signs of slowing down! Students continue to work productively across all learning areas which has been very impressive.

In Reading, students have been exploring aspects of critiquing and analysing, where they are comparing texts on the same topic but of different genre. They have also continued to consolidate their understanding of multiple comprehension strategies, such as summarising, synthesising and inferring main themes or messages.

In Writing, students are nearing the end of the writing process with their explanation texts. They have been writing about the changes to the earth’s surface through processes such as erosion, as well as moving towards explaining how various natural disasters occur. We look forward to seeing their final published pieces soon!

In Numeracy, students continue to work through various attributes of measurement. Having now completed their length and area lessons, they are now exploring the concepts of mass and capacity with hands-on activities. Students are also recapping several Number concepts as a way of revision before heading into Year 6.

In Inquiry, Year 5s are wrapping up their unit on Earth & Space Sciences. We had Chris from Swinburne University visit our Grade 5 students to talk about Natural Disasters. He explained the different layers of our Earth and used different experiments to represent different disasters. Their self-designed solutions to mitigate the impact of natural disasters were especially creative. Students also enjoyed exploring the layers within the Earth, tectonic plate movement, and the causes of natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. These included an explosion with bicarb soda! What an awesome way to end our Inquiry Unit!
