THE IMPORTANCE OF WORK EXPERIENCE
Nazareth College is committed to providing all Nazareth Students with as many opportunities as possible to find a pathway that are right for them. As a part of this process, Year 10 students participate in Work Experience.
Covid led to many organisations shying away from offering work experience, so it is difficult for students to find places. Some schools have not reinstated a work experience program as the workload associated with it is quite cumbersome. The Nazareth Careers Team has seen how positive the experience has been for our students so we have continued our very best to continue to offer Work Experience as a part of the Year 10 Curriculum.
We have met with each Year 10 Careers class to provide students with some helpful tips on how to find work experience including:
- Asking friends, family, and coaches if they know someone who will help support them trying out an area of interest
- Asking fellow students in their Pastoral group what work experience they did and get the contact details if it was good
- Using Google or Online Yellow Pages to find businesses that operate in the area of interest and cold calling/emailing
It may not be easy finding work experience but sometimes it is not easy finding employment so it’s part of the learning process for our students. Not everyone will say yes but that doesn’t mean students should give up.
Students need to be realistic that they may not be able to get work experience in their dream job. For example, we were unsuccessful in getting a placement in the Police Force in 2026. This means students may have to do work experience in another area. It will still be a valuable experience because students get exposure to the work world – getting transport, being on time and gaining confidence in interacting with people they don’t know.
Students have until April 2 to find a placement so if you are a guardian of a Year 10 student, please encourage them to be proactive. If you own a business or work for an organisation that is happy to support our program by hosting a student June 22 – 26, please contact vetadmin@nazareth.vic.edu.au
