APPLIED LEARNING

Structured Work-placement Required - Wednesdays OR Fridays
As parents of VCE VM students you will know how difficult it can be to acquire a day a week placement with an employer. We still have VCE VM students seeking a work-placement in the following areas:
Beauty/makeup - salon, spa or retail
Electrical - appliance repairs, electrical retail, domestic or commercial electricians, auto electrical repairs
Building & Construction - building, carpentry, landscaping, cabinet making, handy man, timber sales
Health - chemists retail, aged care, disability care, medical or allied health services
Plumbing - domestic or commercial
IT - sales, repairs, networking services, help deskBusiness - office administration, sales
Please ask your own employers, neighbours, friends or family members if they could help the next generation by mentoring a Year 11 or 12 student who is already studying in their pathway area.
Placements can be for a term (10 days in total - once a week) or for a semester duration (20 visits from the VCE VM student onsite.)
If you can support the college, please contact Caitlin.Mackay@nazareth.vic.edu.au
Congratulations to Christian - Yr 12 VCE VM
For my final year of high school, I was unsure if I wanted to continue my courses in VCE as I felt as I wasn’t being fully motivated to my potential with a focus on classwork and formal learning, so I decided to go to VCE VM.
I believed this program suited more of my ideals and learning traits, and would be more beneficial and applicable for my future career.
At first, I wasn't sure which work-placement I should go to that married best with my VET Certificate II Hospitality course. But, with the help of my teachers, both at Nazareth and William Angliss, I was able to gain a work placement at The Langham Hotel, and have been working there for many weeks now.
It was the most ideal one day a week placement I could have gained, as it has already helped me gain a more in-depth field of experience in the hotel and catering industry. I have learned so many skills and insights into the hospitality industry. The one day placement has also helped me secure beneficial credits and references for my future career in the Hotel Industry.
Personally, I have become more communicative and confident, and enjoy working as part of a team.

Applied Learning Alumni
The world is smaller than we imagine and this was recently demonstrated over the course of four days.
On a Year 11 and 12 Applied Learning excursion to explore the inner suburb of South Melbourne, our students spotted Matthew Monet (Class of 2024) employed by United Lift Services and about to enter his third year of his electrical studies, specialising in lifts and escalators.
What began as a school-based apprenticeship is now the career Matt embraces with vigour.
I was fortunate to then cross paths with alumni Anthony Mastromanno, another graduate from the field of Electro technology. Anthony was a member of the St Simons and St Jude’s SSJ Youth - the SSJ Warriors at the recent Australian Catholic Youth Festival reunion held at ACU Fitzroy.
In chatting with Anthony, he outlined his diversification from commercial electrician into civil construction. Again, happily employed and a highly successful Nazarene.
Finally, a meet & greet between a current Year 12 VCE VM student and the potential structured work placement employer, I proudly snapped a picture of myself with past Nazarene Marcus Vella.
And as if the stars were aligned, he completed an electrical apprenticeship and has gone on to establish his own business. It seems like only yesterday that fresh into the new school year Marcus took his mates aside to inform them it was his final day at school. He knew he wanted to be out in the workforce. Young and unlicensed and was more than willing to swap school lessons for a 05:00 am alarm. Marcus demonstrated his commitment to his apprenticeship by boarding an early morning train to work sites.
Now a qualified sparky and small business owner of Neocore Electrical, he employs a team of four on domestic and commercial jobs.
Standing beside each of these young men, I am reminded that great things stem from seemingly humble beginnings in Nazareth applied learning programme.
Shining a Spotlight on VCE VM DUX 2024
Once a Nazarene, always a Nazarene!
VCE VM Dux of 2024 Chloe Scott, touched base with us this week. With the incredible achievement of a Certificate III in Beauty and the Diploma in Beauty Services with Endota by the conclusion of Year 12, Chloe now in 2026 commences third year in the Bachelor of Dermal Science at Victoria University.
Hats off to Chloe for her amazing work ethic and incredible attitude in chasing her dream career. It is no wonder that MACS selected Chloe for their VCE VM Promotional Campaign on Instagram! You can see the story here...
