International Women's Day
Harry Lalor
School Captain
On March 8th, our school community celebrated International Women’s Day - an opportunity to appreciate and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
The SRC made purple ribbon pins which were handed out and proudly worn by staff and students alike. The bracelet-making workshop was run in F block - this was very popular, creating a safe space for conversations about the day.
To mark the importance of IWD, BSC was also honoured to host guest speaker Dr Melody Menezes who presented at lunchtime. It was very kind of her to volunteer her time to us and it is greatly appreciated. Many thanks also to 2023/2024 School Council Treasurer, Elise Edwards, for liaising with Dr Menezes on our behalf!
Our Guest Speaker
Dr Melody Menezes, Head Genetic Counsellor at Monash IVF and Scientific Director at Monash Ultrasound, generously volunteered her time to deliver a lunchtime lecture at BSC.
Dr Menezes shared her experience of forging a career in Science and Medicine. Many students and staff of all genders enjoyed hearing her talk about the professional journey she has travelled including the challenges she has faced, as well as the many highlights and achievements she has enjoyed.

Administration
I really enjoyed the chance to hear about Dr Menezes' professional journey, to appreciate the many opportunities available to women in her field as well as to learn from her perspective as a woman forging a career in what was (traditionally) a male dominated profession.
Her insight around issues and obstacles that continue to limit career development for females in the industry was really enlightening, but Dr Menezes' enthusiastic advocacy, positive outlook and predictions of change were inspiring to us all.
