Harmony Day

Everyone Belongs

Tameka Brown

School Captain

Every year we celebrate Harmony Day on 21 March.

This celebration began in 1999 and highlights unity and diversity. Harmony Day was originally an Australian celebration but is now marked worldwide.

On Harmony Day we celebrate that our community is made richer through its exposure to a wide range of language,  food, music, festivals, arts, crafts and  traditional celebrations from across the entire world.

Harmony Day is our chance to remind ourselves that we are lucky to live in a community that is made up by individuals from many and varied backgrounds, ethnicities, religions and cultures. Everyone brings their gifts, skills, perspectives and traditions to our community, all make a valuable contribution and all should be respected.

Activities

Harmony Day was a huge success thanks to the effort put in by SRC members and other supportive members of the school community.

Many different activities were put together to spread awareness about the day including:

  • Casual Clothes day - students enjoyed the opportunity to NOT wear uniform on the day!
  • Orange ribbon pins made up by SRC were given out to both teachers and students on the day so they could show support and spread awareness about the importance of Harmony Day.
  • An audio playlist (made up by our wonderful music captain Emily Lynch) included a range of diverse music to promote Harmony Day. This was well received by all!
  • Pledge-making took place by the hockey field. Students were able to write a pledge on how they felt they could make the world a better and safer place for all. Students were then able to tie their pledge up on the fence for others to see.
  • Bracelet-making was a popular activity during the day. This brought people of different backgrounds together and gave them the opportunity to talk about various topics.
  • Italian and Chinese language teachers ran cultural activities for students to participate in to learn more about these cultures

Casual for a Cause

One of the newly introduced ideas for this year’s Harmony Day was to allow parents and carers of students to donate money via Compass in addition to having students bring in a gold coin donation. We are proud to say that this initative was a huge success!

Overall, the student community raised an outstanding $1227.05 for the whole day.

This year all of our donations from various fundraising events will go towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation We aim to raise $5000 for the ILF by the end of the year - this would be a massive achievement!

Thank you to all those who donated to, and participated in our BSC Harmony Day events.
