Literacy

Recently we explored multisyllabic words. Multisyllabic words are words that have more than one syllable. Knowing how to break big words into syllables helps us read, spell, and say them better. Students know each syllable contains a vowel.

📚 Examples:

Tiger → ti-ger (2 syllables)
Banana → ba-na-na (3 syllables)
Elephant → el-e-phant (3 syllables)

We have learnt words that end with "ck", and it's been fun exploring how they sound and how to spell them correctly. These words usually have a short vowel before the "ck". Some examples of "ck" words we have learnt are duck, sock, rock, clock, and back. Learning these words helps us read and write better every day!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, our Prep students are further developing their understanding of subtraction. They have been representing subtraction stories using manipulatives and tens frames. Here is an example of a subtraction story:

There were 6 apples on the table. Two apples were eaten. How many apples are left?

Furthermore, students are learning all about location. We will be describing position of objects and using keywords such as,

‘inside’ or ‘outside’
‘underneath’ or ‘on top’
‘on the bottom’ or ‘on the top’ of an object

We played games such as Snakes and Ladders to practise moving our counters accurately and recognising number patterns. Playing simple board games like this helps reinforce important mathematical concepts such as counting, number recognition, and taking turns. We encourage families to continue this learning at home by enjoying board games together. It’s a fun and effective way to support your child’s development!

Next, students will learn about sharing and grouping.

Inquiry

As part of our Weather and Seasons unit, the Prep students explored the importance of protecting themselves and animals from the rain and learned about the impact of rainfall on the land. They particularly enjoyed designing and constructing rain shelters for their figurines, applying their understanding in a hands-on activity.

Wellbeing

During our Wellbeing lessons, students have been exploring the values of kindness, bravery, and respect. They listened to a story, identified the emotions experienced by the characters, and engaged in discussions about these feelings. Additionally, students recognised personal strengths and reflected on how these strengths can be used to demonstrate respect.

Reminders

The Importance of Regular School Attendance

At Skye Primary School, we know that regular attendance is key to helping your child thrive, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. When students attend school every day, they stay connected to their learning, build stronger friendships, and feel a greater sense of belonging in the classroom.

We understand that illness and unexpected events can happen, and we appreciate families keeping us informed. If your child is absent, please record the reason via Sentral or contact the office at skye.ps@education.vic.gov.au.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or if there’s anything we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Working together helps ensure every student has the best chance to succeed.

Satchels

Each child has a take-home reading book in their satchel, which should be practiced daily along with their Boomerang book. Kindly ensure that the satchel, reading book, and Boomerang book are returned to school each day. Additionally, each child has their login details in their Boomerang book, granting them access to Little Learners Decodable Readers online.

Toileting Before School

Please remind your child to use the toilet before school so that their learning is not interrupted in the morning session.

Spare Clothes

With the wet weather upon us, please ensure your child has a change of clothes, including socks, in their bag. Please label all items with your child’s name.

Buddies

The Prep students have continued to enjoy their fortnightly Buddies activities. One of the recent activities, called Nature Art, involved drawing a frame with chalk and filling it with natural materials to create a picture

Book Week

Skye Primary School had an exciting week at school filled with many enjoyable literacy activities. Children participated in buddy activities and a variety of tasks in the library. The highlight of the week was our annual parade, where children showcased many enchanting costumes and the teachers performed a fantastic song.

Congratulations to all the students who received their Dojo Awards!
