Connect: Year 2

Another fortnight over and what a fortnight it's been! The Grade Twos have been buzzing with highlights, including Hot Chip Day, Book Week and our Museum excursion. It's only a short term, and with so much fun, it continues to disappear fast!
Have a wonderful fortnight,
Dave, Emma and Hailee
The Importance of Regular School Attendance
At Skye Primary School, we know that regular attendance is key to helping your child thrive, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. When students attend school every day, they stay connected to their learning, build stronger friendships, and feel a greater sense of belonging in the classroom.
We understand that illness and unexpected events can happen, and we appreciate families keeping us informed. If your child is absent, please record the reason via Sentral or contact the office at skye.ps@education.vic.gov.au.
If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or if there’s anything we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Working together helps ensure every student has the best chance to succeed.

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
In phonics, we will begin Stage 7.5, focusing on the morphology of words such as the suffix 'ed' and the prefixes 'pre' and 're.'
We have started our non-fiction unit using the mentor text, 'Walking in Gagudju Country: Exploring the Monsoon Rainforest, an indigenous text dedicated to the Elders and the people of the Gagudju (or Kakadu) area, the nonfiction narrative encompassing a walk in the unique ecosystem of the monsoon forest in the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park. Students will use what they learn about informative texts to create their own inspired by the prehistoric creatures we explore at the museum.
Numeracy
In Number, students will be exploring Multiplication and Division with a focus on doubling and halving, arrays and the patterns of 2s, 5s and 10s.
Students will also be estimating, measuring and comparing the mass of familiar objects using uniform informal units of measurement.
Inquiry - Use of Earth's Resources
Students will learn about the importance of water, energy and soil, three of Earth's most important resources. They will consider how they use water, where water comes from, and how we can conserve it. They will take part in a water filtration experiment to learn about how water is treated. Students will investigate ways to conserve energy and the importance of soil for sustaining life. They will become soil detectives and examine different soil samples.
Wellbeing
We are looking forward to seeing you next week! If possible, please bring along your smart phone as we have some QR code scanning components to our activity.
A Celebration of Learning
We loved all the amazing costumes the kids dressed in for our Book Week Parade - we had everything from superheroes to sports stars and demon hunters to princesses. The Grade 2s also paired up with their Grade 5 Buddies to build cross-school connections and to work on some wonderful Book Week craft. A big thank you to our superstar ES, Rach, for her hard work putting up our BFG inspired Dream Jar display! Check out all the photos below!
Museum Excursion
Another highlight was our much-anticipated excursion to the Melbourne Museum. We discovered some amazing facts... Did you know that whales used to have arms and legs to help them feed in shallow waters?
The children navigated the process quite well, managing their excitement on bus, taking care of their belongings and positively representing our school. Many students were super excited to see and be in the big city and commented on how this was the furthest they've ever been on an excursion from school!
