What's happening in our classroom?

Literacy

This term we will be exploring a non-fiction unit of learning in Literacy titled, Into the Unknown. This unit of learning will focus on Australian History and more specifically, early explorers. We will be learning about what motivated people to explore and who some of the important explorers were. Students will learn about the importance of trade during this time period and the settlement of Australia as a penal colony.

In Writing, students have been learning about the structure and features of information report writing. They have been learning about the structure of an introduction, body paragraph and conclusion. Students will begin researching an animal they chose to plan, draft and publish their own information report.

Numeracy

Over the coming weeks students will be learning multiplication and division as part of our maths learning. This will include a focus on partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones and how to use an area model or vertical algorithm to solve multiplication problems. Students will continue to practice their skip counting daily for 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables.

As part of our mathematics learning students will be exploring Location in the coming weeks. This will include learning about how to locate features on a map and describe their position using a grid reference system. Building on this understanding students will draw their own maps, using features of a map and a grid reference system.

    Inquiry

This term our Inquiry unit is called, Types of Forces. This unit will involve students learning about different types of forces and how they are exerted.

Some essential questions from this unit include:

  • What are some samples of forces?

  • How can we harness the power of the wind?

  • What is friction and how is it used in everyday objects?

  • What is magnetism and how is it used in everyday objects?

Well-being

This term students will be working on the following topics in our Wellbeing learning:

  • Positive Coping Strategies

  • Problem Solving

  • Personal & Cultural Strengths

The Importance of Regular School Attendance

At Skye Primary School, we know that regular attendance is key to helping your child thrive, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. When students attend school every day, they stay connected to their learning, build stronger friendships, and feel a greater sense of belonging in the classroom.

We understand that illness and unexpected events can happen, and we appreciate families keeping us informed. If your child is absent, please record the reason via Sentral or contact the office at skye.ps@education.vic.gov.au

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or if there’s anything we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Working together helps ensure every student has the best chance to succeed.

Celebration of Learning

Inquiry Learning

Recently students conducted an experiment to learn about how friction effects the motion of objects. Students made a prediction about what would happen if a shoe and a tennis ball were both let go from the top of a slide at the same time. In groups students were then given the task of trying to change the friction of the ball or the shoe using newspaper and sticky tape.

Book Week

Last week we had a fantastic 'Book Week' celebration by dressing up as our favourite characters.
