Our Learning for Weeks 8-9

Time flies when you're having fun! This term is going by very quickly in Prep. The students are very excited to be taking home their reader bags for the very first time this week.

In English, students will:

  • continue to learn the days of the week through our morning routines.

  • review reading and writing our Stage 1 letter-sounds and identify where the sound is in simple CVC words.

  • learn to read and write phonemes Stage 1 letter-sounds and identify these sounds in simple CVC words.

  • continue to explore poems and identify words that rhyme.

  • identify adjectives that describe emotions using poems.

Take-home readers has begun this week!  To start, students will bring home a phonics books that focuses on the sounds they have learnt so far this term. Inside the front cover of the phonics book, you will find helpful information to support reading at home. A reading log will also be placed in the back of the book for you to record each time your child reads.

  • From Term 2, students will begin bringing home both a phonics book and a decodable text. Each child has been provided with a take-home reader bag, which will be sent home with their phonics book this week. Reader bags will be exchanged on your child’s library day.
  • We encourage families to establish a regular reading routine at home, even if it is just a few minutes each day. Reading together is a powerful and enjoyable way to support your child’s confidence, fluency, and love of reading.

  • continue to use the 100 days of school chart to count and order numbers.
  • continue to develop place value understanding through subitising, using a range of manipulatives and strategies such as counters, tens frames, and dice.

In Inquiry, students will:

  • identify ways to care for and include others
  • identify different emotions that their friends may experience at school and practise appropriate ways to respond with kindness, care, and understanding

  • continue their journey through the Kindness Kingdom, learning about identifying emotions of others and ways to show kindness.
  • listen to and discuss a story book about feelings and emotions.
