Our Learning - Weeks 8 & 9

The Outcomes are based on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). The VEYLDF is a curriculum framework designed for early childhood education in Victoria, focusing on children birth to eight years.

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

The children are really settling into the routines and are demonstrating an openness to make new discoveries and challenge their current abilities.  They are beginning to understand how to work collaboratively and communicate ideas and boundaries with their peers.  The children have really enjoyed sharing about their cultural practices during Ramadan, with Aqeela setting up thoughtful play experiences, sharing songs and eating dates with the children

Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world

The teachers are supporting the children in learning how to listen to other children's ideas and incorporating those ideas into their peer, group play.  We have seen the children create their own games, including ball sports, such as cricket.  We have supported the children with turn taking and peer participation, particularly with a focus on fairness and collaboration.  We have aslo implemented supporting and guiding the children to reset the outdoor activities prior to moving to our indoor program.  In this way, we are encouraging the children to be responsible and respectful of their learning environments.

Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

With our term inquiry focus on 'Healthy Choices Healthy Me' we have created play experiences associated with the Food Rainbow where each colour fruit or vegetable represents a different health benefit.  We have held group discussions,  created learning spaces, read stories and sang songs based on the health benefits of restful sleep, drinking plenty of water and physical exercise.

We have also had a focus on supporting the children to attempt difficult tasks prior to asking for assistance from their teachers.  This has enabled the children to problem solve and develop their independence skills.  We continue to support the children's efforts, by breaking difficult tasks down into more manageable steps and supporting the children with verbal guidance and allowing the children to complete the task independently.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners

We have observed the children's natural curiosity and enthusiasm in their learning.  This is where, as teachers, we support and guide the children to scaffold their learning and extend their current knowledge.  By using questioning, posing ideas and supporting further researching techniques we can provide the children with more meaningful inquiry-based experiences.

Our STEM focus this fortnight has been on geometrical shapes, introducing positional language, such as inside, outside, above and beside and language associated with shapes, such as, sides, angles, corners, points and curve

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators

As many of the children are from EAL background (English as an Additional Language) we have incorporated many different forms of communication to ensure that we are providing all the children with the best opportunities to understand, contribute and share ideas with their peers and teachers.  We also have multi-ligual teachers who are able to communicate and support children and families in their home language.  We are also utilising music, songs and books to share ideas with the children and for the children to participate in group times

Inquiry: Healthy choices, Healthy me.

An inquiry into:

  • Daily habits and routines
  • How the choices we make affect our health
  • What it means to have a balanced lifestyle

Over the course of the term, children will:

  • Develop their emerging autonomy, inter-dependence, resilience and sense of agency
  • Develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities
  • Express emotions and views constructively
