What Are We Learning?
English:
Students have been exploring both narrative and persuasive writing through our novel studies of The Rabbits and The Viewer. Our learning has focused on:
- Understanding how authors use sentence structure (short and long sentences) to create mood and tension
- Expanding sentences using descriptive language to build vivid imagery
- Writing compound and complex sentences using conjunctions to connect ideas clearly
- Developing an understanding of persuasive writing, including structure (introduction, body, conclusion) and key language features
- Building typing skills and writing stamina through regular practice
Students have been learning how authors carefully choose their words and sentence structures to influence readers, and have been applying these techniques in their own writing.
Mathematics:
In Maths, our focus has shifted to Measurement, particularly exploring length and capacity. Students have been learning to:
- Identify and order metric units (millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres)
- Choose the most appropriate unit when measuring different objects or distances
- Understand how units relate to each other using powers of 10
- Measure and compare distances using a range of tools and units
- Apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, explaining and justifying their thinking
We have been building students’ ability to think critically about measurement, encouraging them to explain their reasoning and make practical, real-world connections.
Upcoming Events:
Incursion:
On the 26th of March our Year 5 students will take part in a special cultural dance incursion led by First Nations educators. During this session, students will explore how dance, storytelling and traditional practices are used to share culture, identity and connection to Country. They will learn about Dreaming stories and participate in movement activities that help bring these important traditions to life.
This experience supports our Culture and Connection unit, where students are learning about understanding themselves and others. It provides a valuable opportunity for students to develop respect for different cultures, appreciate diverse perspectives, and build empathy and inclusivity within our classroom community.
Dress up Day:
Fri 27th March
SRC DRESS UP Day
Bring a gold coin and come dressed as something that matches the first letter of your name!
Homework Reminder:
Please ensure students are:
- Practising times tables on timetables.com
- Reading for 20 minutes each night
- Practising their weekly spelling words
- Filling in their diaries daily
- Bringing their diaries to school every morning
Consistency with homework supports classroom learning and builds strong study habits.
NAPLAN
We would like to congratulate our Year 5 students on successfully completing their NAPLAN assessments this week. We are incredibly proud of the resilience and perseverance they showed, particularly while navigating some unexpected technical difficulties during the online tests. The students remained calm, patient and continued to give their best effort throughout the process. Their positive attitude and determination were wonderful to see, and they should all feel very proud of the way they approached the assessments.
