Industry Experts Inspire VET Electrotechnology Students

On Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 June 2026, Macleod College was pleased to welcome industry guests Tonina Cassar and Glenn Pitcher, who spent time with our VET Electrotechnology Certificate II students, supporting our first-year Wednesday class and second-year Thursday class.

As part of the VET Electrotechnology program, students are required to develop an understanding of key industry topics including qualifications and career pathways, industry organisations, occupational licensing, and occupational health and safety (OH&S). Having experienced professionals share their knowledge provided students with valuable real-world insights that complement their classroom learning.

Tonina and Glenn drew on their extensive industry backgrounds to help students understand the differences between working in the rail industry through Yarra Trams and the manufacturing sector. Their discussions highlighted the unique workplace environments, expectations, and opportunities available across these industries, giving students a broader understanding of potential career pathways in the electrical trade.

Students also gained an insight into Yarra Trams as an industry leader and the importance of teamwork in delivering safe, reliable tram services while maintaining a high standard of customer experience for passengers across Melbourne.

A particularly inspiring aspect of the sessions was hearing Tonina Cassar share her personal journey as a female electrician in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her experiences and achievements demonstrated the diverse and rewarding opportunities available in the electrical trade, providing encouragement to all students.

The visit also gave students the opportunity to observe and discuss practical technical skills used in the trade, such as stripping wire, reinforcing the importance of precision, safety, and attention to detail in electrotechnology work.
